Friday Finish

Today I'm going to show you the finish of the 3030 quilt which was a BOW from Sentimental Stitches. I started piecing the blocks the fall of 2020. Here is link with more information about my progress.

Lori Null long arm quilted the quilt with an overall feather design. This picture displays the quilting the best.

There wasn't much of a stained window effect with this backing fabric. I purchased this years ago and just decided to use it. The quilting doesn't show on the back at all.

The quilt finishes at 57.5" by 64".

Back to the 30's!

When I last posted about the 3030 quilt I had 55 blocks pieced. Even though this project has been out of sight, it hasn't been out of mind and I know how I'm going to finish it.

The first step was a no brainer, I pieced one more block so the blocks will be set 7 blocks by 8 blocks.

The next decision was how to set the blocks, straight set or diagonal set. There are more blocks than are on the display wall but you get the idea.

I'm going with the KISS method for finishing so straight set it is.

I had been planning all along to put sashing in between the blocks, no way was I going to try to sew block next to block, just way too many seams.

I toyed with the idea of using a light blue fabric for sashing with yellow cornerstones but decided against that and went with the blue background fabric. This way the blocks float.

For the finale, I added a 6.5" border which will finish at 6". The flimsy measures 60.5" by 67.5". Now I need to decide hand quilting or machine, 3030 is back to time out again while I think about it.

We got snow when the big snowstorm went across the US several weeks ago but nothing like the northeast states did. The snow has to go somewhere so when the farmer cleans out the driveway, he pushes a pile in the yard north of my kitchen.

This makes a good mountain to climb. He's only 4 so I'm sure it feels like he's scaled Mount Everest!

In the winter the cows can lounge in the free stalls in the shed or eat balage from the hay feeder in the shed lot. Sometimes they stand outside, lazily chewing their cud with their eyes shut. I'm sure they are dreaming about long summer days and nights in the bottom pasture.

3030 Quilt, the Last Block

The last block pattern for the 3030 quilt was released last Friday. I made 4 of the blocks. 

Here's a picture of the 55 blocks I've made.

Gay also released the setting design for the quilt which is very pretty. But I'm tired of making these blocks and I don't want to applique the applique blocks so I'm going to use them a different way. For now they are going into time out while I think about how to utilize them. 

I have a different project to start 2021 with.

Back to 3030

 I've started piecing 3030 blocks again. I've decided I am not going to make the applique blocks. They're really cute and pretty but I'm just not in the mood for applique.

I think friendship stars never look right, it's doesn't matter which direction the point goes, they just don't look right.

Since I am not making the applique center or the applique blocks, I am making additional pieced blocks. I also want my quilt to be larger than the original quilt. I'm not sure how I'm going to arrange the blocks but I need to get them pieced first.

3030 Blocks

 The 3030 blocks are caught up except for the one that was just released. I haven't made the alternate blocks because they're directional, I will wait and see how Gay sets the blocks. If I like the way they look, I'll make them, if not I'll come up with my own alternate blocks.

I am piecing two blocks from each pattern, five of the blocks are duplicates from earlier blocks.

Even More 3030 Blocks

 I'm slowly getting caught up on the blocks for the 3030 quilt. In the center of the quilt is a lovely applique medallion. I am slow at hand applique and I've decided not to add the center medallion, I can piece the blocks much faster than I can applique. This decision means I'm going to need more blocks. I've started making double blocks of each block, unless it calls for multiple blocks already. As of now, I am still planning on making the individual applique blocks but that plan may change too.

These are the most recent completed blocks. I've never pieced a card trick block before. It was very easy using the foundation paper pieceing method.

I've been binge watching the Great British Baking Show while I'm sewing. The programs put me in the mood to bake, fortunately without Paul Hollywood to critique my results.

First are 4 loaves of whole wheat sour dough bread. My bread recipe is based on this recipe from King Arthur but of course I've made some changes to my recipe and also made a larger quantity. This is a soft bread with sourdough starter as an ingredient. 

I also made two loaves of pumpkin quick bread and a new recipe called orange yogurt quick bread. Both recipes are from the Best of Country Breads published by Reiman Publications in 2000. I cut open the orange yogurt bread first since it was a new recipe. It was delicious! My glaze didn't drizzle very well but that's fine with my family, the grandsons don't care.

More 3030 Blocks

More 3030 blocks have been pieced. The 3030 quilt is a BOW from Sentimental Stitches.

I'm piecing my 3030 blocks using the foundation paper piecing patterns Gay has included with the pattern instructions. You can use whichever method you prefer, paper piecing or regular piecing.

I prefer paper piecing because I know the points aren't going to get cut off. Some people think you waste fabric paper piecing. Yes, some fabric is wasted but I have plenty of fabric. I'd rather have the block be perfect the first time, as long as I get the correct fabrics in the block.

Earlier this week I took some time to take pictures of the trees around the house and down the driveway. It's supposed to rain soon and the leaves will start to drop. Enjoy the colors!

3030 Blocks

 I've come late to starting the 3030 BOW project. This isn't a mystery, Gay has revealed how the blocks will be set so I've decided to join in.

I'm a boring person, it seems the background fabric of my projects are always a light color, usually white. I've decided to be daring with this quilt and my background fabric is a dark royal blue. It's the same blue I used in the border of blue Stars Around the Garden.

I wasn't 100% sold on this idea but block 1 has been pieced. I was disappointed, the fabrics didn't work together. So I made another block, scroll down for that one.

I've included pictures of the back of the block because people often ask what the back looks like when you foundation paper piece, the second photo has the papers removed.

I like this block a lot better. 😊 

Here is block 2. The orange and green are brighter, I guess I just don't have a good enough camera to pick up the true colors. 

Block 3 is an applique block, so it, and all the other applique blocks, will have to wait until after I finish the applique for the borders for Stars Around the Garden.

Block 4 is a T block. It was fun so I made a second block in two colors this time. I know what the blocks are through block 19. There is one block I didn't like so the second block 4 is the replacement block. 

Block 5 is also completed.  I don't know how long it will take me to get caught up on the blocks but I'm going to keep piecing and I'm going to keep using the blue background fabric.

These blocks finish at 6".
