More 9 Patch Crib Quilts

I actually used a pattern for the next group of 9 patch crib quilts, at least 2 out of the 3. The pattern is County Fair and is from Lissa Alexander's book, Scrap School.

This first quilt I made a smaller version of Country Fair. But when I sewed it together, the triangle pieces didn't fit! I had glanced over the pattern and thought I knew what I was doing. The sashing was a different size than I thought.  I did NOT take it apart, just cut new triangles and sewed it together.

I just straight line quilted 1/2" from the seam lines. After I attached the binding, I realized I missed a line of quilting. I'm just leaving it like it is. This little quilt measures 35.5" by 46".

I made sure I followed the pattern for the next quilt but then I forgot what I was doing and sewed sashing onto the corner 9 patches. That correction was easily made. This little cutie measures 43" by 53".

For the 3rd quilt, I decided to just make it simple and used a straight set. I used curvy line quilting stitching all the seams vertically but just quilted the horizontal sashing seams. This quilt measures 44" by 52"

Here are all three of them hanging on the clothes line.

Finally Some Finishes!

At the end of December I wrote a very detailed post about the challenges I have planned for 2022. Guess which project I started working on first? None of them!

Cathy from Sane, Crazy Crumby Quilting often mentions how she focuses on a project a month at a time. That's what I decided to do.

I pieced several crib quilts in 2021 and decided I was going to spend January machine quilting them. Machine quilting is not my favorite quilting activity but if they're quilted, I'll have some finishes to show you. Also the sense of accomplishment would feel pretty good too.

The first crib quilted was the orange 9 patch quilt. My sewing machine has a curvy stitch setting which I can elongate. I stitched al the seams with the curvy stitch. The binding fabric has been hanging around the sewing room for years. It was perfect for the binding which was machine stitched on both sides.

After quilting the finished measurement is 42" by 49".

All my posts this week will be about the crib quilts.

More 9 Patch Quilts

I sewed a LOT of 2.5" strips to make 9 patch blocks for crib quilts. The orange 9 patch was the first one. For the 2nd and 3rd quilts, I actually used a pattern!

I recently purchased the book Scrap School by Lissa Alexander and decided to make a smaller version of the County Fair quilt. I had already made the 9 patches using 2.5" squares.

I glanced at the directions and made sure I cut the side triangles the correct size and started sewing the blocks together. Everything went great until I tried to sew the side triangles onto the rows, they didn't FIT! So I checked the pattern again. I thought the quilt was based entirely 2.5" squares and strips, wrong!

I certainly wasn't going to take these rows apart to trim the sashing so I improvised and finished the flimsy. It measures 35.5" by 47".

Then I started the next quilt making sure I used the correct sashing size. Those triangles fit the sides perfectly. I sewed the rows together, pressed the center then sewed the corner triangles onto the quilt. Something was off on two of the corners.

After checking the pattern, I realized I had sewn a sashing piece onto the outside of those two corners. I sewed the triangles on anyway them trimmed the outer edge of the quilt. You wouldn't even know it wasn't supposed to be that way. This quilt measures 42.5" by 54".

By now I had enough of the Country Fair pattern and arranged the rest of the blocks in a 5 by 6 straight set.

I was digging around in a box and found some older fabric that needs to be used for borders.

This little quilt measures 45" by 53".

Now I have 3 more little quilts to quilt this winter. I'm done piecing 9 patches for awhile.

After I clean up the sewing room, I'm going to trim the applique center for Lady Jane and see how long it takes to piece this flimsy. My 100 days are going fast!

Quilted Baby Quilts

The baby quilts I pieced in March have been quilted. Machine quilting is not my favorite thing to do but I kept after them and they're quilted.

Some quilters are able to free hand quilt beautiful quilting designs with their sewing machine. I'm not one of them, my quilting is basic.

You can see on this quilt the border is baptist fan. The pieced center is quilted 1/2" from the seam line both horizontally and vertically. Those red blocks are actually pink blocks.

The center of the lavender quilt was quilted in the ditch vertically and horizontally then diagonally both directions.

This dark yellow quilt was quilted 1/2" from the seam line in just one direction and carried through the outside borders.

The center of the light yellow quilt was quilted with a clam shell design then baptist fans for the outside border.

I had a large cable stencil I traced overall the green quilt. It was harder to quilt those curved lines than I anticipated but it's finished!

Last fall I bought some new king sized flannel sheets. We use regular sized pillows on our bed so I didn't need the pillowcases. I removed the stitching then sewed them together for the backs of two of these crib quilts. I thought the backs looked nice mixing the two fabrics together.

You can see the cable quilting on the back of the left quilt.

I had an extra top sheet so I used that for two quilt backs.

I needed to get a new set of sheets for the warmer days that are coming. Again I used the pillowcase fabric for backing.

I used striped fabrics for binding on all the quilts. They all measure 40" by 46" and have been donated to the daycare center at my church.

9 Patch Crib Quilts

The 9 patch and turquoise quilt didn't use nearly as many 9 patches as I thought it would so I decided to make some simple crib quilts.

I dug through the solids box and pulled fabrics for squares and borders. I'm sorry the pictures are blurry but it was really windy when I took the photos!

The flimsies measure 40.5" by 46".
