Another Teal Quilt, Petite Antique Lace . . . Someday!

For the past several months I've been making quilts to be gifted to granddaughter Joanna when she's older. Three have been pieced and sent to the long arm quilter. There is actually a 4th quilt I would like to make for her 'someday' but not this year. Quadrangle used a lot of the fabrics left from the first two quilt but there are still scraps not used.

While at Calico Point a year ago, I noticed one of the young clerks was sewing HST's. I wandered over to where she was sewing and asked to see the pattern, it was Petite Antique Lace. I had seen this pattern hanging with the patterns before and was intrigued with it. I purchased the pattern but I knew it was definitely NOT going to be one of the quilts I pieced in 2025.

The clerk's quilt is finished and on display at Calico Point.

Isn't it beautiful? The border fabric is the same fabric I used on Teal Stars.

I have no intention of making this quilt larger, there are so many HST's! Piecing all the HST's with Thangles will be a great mindless project to work on at future retreats.

Update - A comment was made that they made this quilt several years ago when it was a free pattern from MSQC, it's not free anymore.

Elegant Garden, Block 21

Block 21 was an easier block to applique, fast too!

Usually it is the circles that liven up the block, in this case it was when I added the green leaves. Fussy-cutting the flowers added added extra zing also. I think this background fabric is my favorite one of them all.

The Elegant Garden quilt was designed by Edyta Sitar in 2007.

I have challenged myself to use only the civil war fabrics I already have on hand.

Last week a commenter asked if I'd show more of actual process of applique. I have another project I'll work on after Elegant Garden is finished. I'll show more detail with those blocks.

Teal Stars

Teal Stars is a complete finish, she came home from Calico Point last Saturday.

She's displayed on our bed because I don't want to use the quilt line, the plants aren't all up yet in the flowerbed. I don't want her dragging in the soil.

The Baptist Fan quilting was perfect choice for this quilt.

That is double delight peeking out under teal stars. We have a king sized bed. At 96" square, teal stars will fit nicely on a queen or regular sized bed.

The white fabric surrounding the stars display the quilting nice, the teal fabrics are more busy. The backing fabric is a white whole cloth fabric with small white flowers.

One more picture, just because!

Here is a link to several posts about Teal Stars, the flimsy, the center, the first star. Teal Stars was the first of several quilts I've pieced for granddaughter Joanna this year. This quilt was #6 on my long lists of quilts for this year   . . . and beyond!

One of the reasons I'm pushing myself to make these quilts for the granddaughters is I'll turn 70 this year. I watched my mother succumb to dementia and no longer have the comprehension or ability to finish the many projects she used to easily complete. I may not develop dementia but I want these quilts completed just in case. I have so many quilts on my to do list, I'll never run out of quilts to make.

Elegant Garden, Block 20

Happy Easter, the Lord is Risen!

Warning! This is a  long  post, get a cup of coffee or tea to savor while you read.

Block 20 of Elegant Garden is completed. I did a deep sigh when I prepped this block, so many little pieces!

I am going to show you my applique progress with this block, I decided to do this on day two of applique. The light green leaves were appliqued the first evening. The second day of applique was a Sunday afternoon and I appliqued the darker green leaves. I started around 2ish and completed around 5:30ish. A nap did occur during the process. The smaller the pieces to be appliqued, the longer it takes.

The next evening the branches and one stem were appliqued.

It's interesting, I'll be appliqueing, then all at once I've had enough and need to stop. I can't force myself to take another stitch.

I know there is more of the branch/stem fabric but I couldn't put my hands on it when I needed it. I'm not sure how well the lighter green is going to blend in but it's there and I'm not changing it.

All off the stems are now appliqued and the blue corner flowers are also.

I added one of the flower centers. This is the only yellow fabric that I have in the civil war tub. It's not a bright yellow but it works.

Last evening I added the rest of the yellow circles. I had planned to make the small circles on the curved stems blue also but now I'm reconsidering.

I'll wait to add those until the center is completed.

The honey brown fabric in the center looks nice.

I had thought maybe the pink things were a design in the fabric of the flower on the pattern photo, they weren't. Those little pink fingers take a long time to applique!  They will probably take whole evening to do just for themselves.

Yes, they did take a whole evening to applique! They were very fiddly but they do look nice now that they are completed. I added the center circle which I fussy cut.

There were extra circles to be appliqued on the center circle of the applique pattern. I decided since those pink fingers took so long and were very frustrating, a fussy cut circle was the perfect finish.

I had intended to use the dark blue fabric for the other small circles but now I think that is too dark. The local grandsons are here for several days so I won't be appliqueing in the evenings until they leave. I'll make the final decision after they return home.

As you can see, I decided to go with two fabrics, pink and red.

I thought making all the circles red might make it too dark. Block 20 is now a finish, block 21 is prepped and ready to applique!

Some applique patterns tell you the order to applique. This pattern does not so you have to be alert and make sure you applique in the correct order or you will be removing applique stitching which can be challenging.

The design is marked with a Frixion pen which disappears when pressed with a HOT iron after the applique is finished.

My sewing machine time this week was spent adding the next 9 patch rows to Rhapsody in Blue.

At this point it measures 90.25". The next step was to add the gray border.

And a view from the other side because I think it's so pretty! I know you see some blocks in there that look red. That fabric is a light blue background but red seems to pop out for pictures.

The flimsy has been returned to Elaine for her to add more applique. The applique will be in two opposite corners which will leave room for some very pretty hand quilting. The gray border won't be quite this large, it will be trimmed off. A dark blue border will frame the quilt. I'm not sure how wide the blue border will be, as I've said before, we're creating this quilt as we go along. Tentatively the quilt should finish at 120".

Quadrangle

I started the 3rd quilt for Joanna right after I finished Log Cabin Hearts. The pattern I used is Quadrangle, Quadrangle is a free pattern from Moda. I first saw this pattern when Becky, from Quilted Twins, showed the quilt she made from this pattern.

Fabrics left from the first two quilts were used in this quilt, those were blue-teal fabrics. For this quilt I've added the 'seafoam teal' fabrics from my stash. I actually have more seafoam fabrics than blue-teal fabrics. As usual, I made the quilt larger. My finished flimsy is 93" square, it seems all the quilts I've made Joanna are square quilts. And, for some reason,  Blogger wants this paragraph centered. Of course there is no arguing with Blogger. 😳 😉

First I sewed foursies then added the sashing. Even though I kept counting, I still made too many four patches. Most of the sashing is the dark teal used for the border of the Log Cabin hearts quilt. When that fabric was gone, another dark teal was substituted but it's a shade lighter. That's okay, this quilt is about using it up. And yes, some purples popped in there also.

I had purchased a teal jelly roll before I made Teal Stars since I knew those stars were made from 2.5" strips. When I unrolled the fabrics, I thought they were too random and didn't really blend well. They were perfect for this quilt though, there is an assortment of varied teals in this quilt.

Not all the strips were used in the quilt, there were enough strips left to become the binding.

The outside border is fabric I had purchased several years ago when I knew I was going to be making teal quilts someday. I like the mix of blue/teal and green/teal in the flowers. There is also some touches of dark blue in there.

When you looked at the pattern, then look at my quilt, you see my sashing is different. I must have had a brain freeze because I thought there was actually cornerstones between all the 4 patches! I realized that after I had them all pieced, oh well. I used them anyway, why not?!

This isn't a hard quilt to piece. Someday I will probably make this pattern again, perhaps I'll experiment and cut the 4 patch squares larger.

This flimsy has been delivered to Calico Point for long arm quilting.

Quadrangle was #8 on my long list of quilts to make this year. I know I said I planned to make the 2024 BOM's patterns from A Quilting Life but I also reserved the right to change my mind to patterns. What is important, is all 3 flimsies are finished and at the quilter.

Elegant Garden, Block 19

Block 19 of Elegant Garden is the last block in row 4, just one more row to appplique in this little quilt.

There are two blocks with this background fabric in this quilt. Both blocks have designs that the stripe can be turned either way. I'll make sure each block is turned differently from the other just to make the layout more interesting.

I had originally planned to make the little circles the same pink in the block I showed last week but pink didn't look right. These red circles were made to use in another block but they didn't work in that block. It is surprising how these little circles add zing to the blocks. Of course the circle in the center of the lavender block helps.

Here all the blocks so far.

The space in the empty spot will have a pieced block which I will piece after all the appliqued blocks are finished.

Elegant Garden is designed by Edyta Sitar.

Elaine finished the applique on the inside border of the relief sale quilt, Rhapsody in Blue. She sent it home with me to add the next round of 9 patch blocks.

What I Sewed at Retreat

Here is an update on what I sewed at retreat last week. My intention had been to piece all the posy blocks for Garden Party but that didn't happen. All I did was sew the posy blocks!

I brought home 10 partial blocks and need to piece 15 more. I'll get those blocks pieced and all of the blocks squared before putting them into timeout. Sometime I'll piece the alternate chain blocks. Garden Party is #4 on my list of 2025 Projects.

Garden Party was designed by Bonnie Hunter and can be found in the Addicted to Scraps book. I did find a website to purchase only the pattern.

The only shopping I did at retreat was from the sale table.  I purchased this pattern because I thought it looked like me. I've never made a machine applique quilt and this looks like the perfect design to start with but that won't be happening in the immediate future.

I paid $5 for the pattern. I found a used pattern online for $18 if you are interested. It doesn't bother me to buy used patterns.

I also purchased this folder book for $1. I haven't had time to browse/read through it yet but Donna said this would be a good investment.

Elegant Garden, Block 18

Block 18 of Elegant Garden is completed, just one more block to applique for row 4 then I'll be starting the last row.

I really like this block even though there were so many pieces. It's like eating an elephant, just one piece at a time.

The Elegant Garden quilt was designed by Edtyta Sitar. I have challenged myself to use only the civil war fabrics I already have on hand to make these blocks.
