Scrappy Barn Quilt

I've started a new quilt called scrappy Barn Quilt. It's a log cabin pattern by Edyta Sitar from her book Scrappy Fireworks Quilts. In her book she calls her quilt Blue Barn Quilt but I'm calling mine scrappy barn quilt. I can't find a picture of this quilt online so you'll have to wait until my flimsy is pieced to see the finished quilt. Here is what I've accomplished so far.

Edyta also has an individual pattern called Blue Barn but they're not the same pattern.

So far I've pieced 45 blocks but they didn't all fit on the design wall. These blocks are made using 1-1/4" strips. Edyta played more with shading of the medium and dark strips. I'm just sewing my blocks and not shading. More blocks will be pieced on and off this fall/winter. This is a slow in progress quilt.

Scrappy Barn Quilt

More log cabin blocks for scrappy barn quilt have been pieced. The 100 blocks I needed are completed but the problem is, I don't want a square quilt. I need to piece 20 more blocks so my quilt will be rectangular.

The pattern was designed by Edyta Sitar and is from her book Scrappy Fireworks Quilts. In her book she calls her quilt Blue Barn Quilt but I'm calling mine scrappy barn quilt. I can't find a picture of this quilt online so you'll have to wait until my flimsy is pieced to see the finished quilt. Edyta also has an individual pattern called Blue Barn but they're not the same pattern.

I kind of went heavy with pink for this last group of blocks. The next group of blocks will be made utilizing all the strings already cut.

Scrappy Barn Quilt Flimsy

Scrappy barn quit is a flimsy! It's a log cabin pattern by Edyta Sitar from her book Scrappy Fireworks Quilts. In her book she calls her quilt Blue Barn Quilt but I've renamed my quilt to scrappy barn quilt. Edyta also has an individual pattern called Blue Barn but they're not the same pattern.

I was disappointed when the center of my quilt was sewn together, it looked rather blah and dull. The narrow black border and the outside brown border brought the center to life! I am very pleased with this flimsy. The quilt top measures 80-1/2" by 94".

I had been using the small leftover strips to make the centers of the log cabin blocks but since I have enough blocks pieced, what do I do with those small strips and all the other 1-1/4" strips? You start another quilt!

String X is the project to use strips. I'm even sewing the very little pieces together to make larger strips. The paper base of the block is cut 4-1/2" by 10-1/2".  I'm also using triangles left from other projects too.

It's ok if the bottom corners aren't covered, you're going to cut the corners into a point.

String X is a Bonnie Hunter pattern and can be found here. I don't know how many blocks I'll make, so far 5 rectangles have been pieced.

4 X 4 Quilt

Last week ago I showed you a scrappy quilt made using leftover 9 patches from Scrappy 9 Patches. The next project was making a flimsy from extra squares used in the border of Sweet Surrender.

I knew I wanted to strip piece the Sweet Surrender border, so much easier than sewing individual blocks together. I also knew there would be a lot of leftover squares. In my mind, I had been casually thinking about what to do with the extra strips and squares.

The first thing I do every morning, while sipping my coffee before heading out to the barn, is check the Missouri Star Quilt Co. website and see what the daily deal is for that day. One day I checked and the 4 X 4 pattern was a free download for that day's daily deal and, it used squares, perfect!

Here is my version of the 4 X 4 quilt. I arranged the blocks differently than the picture on the front of the pattern.

Since I was using leftover strip pieces, I didn't make my blocks like the pattern said. A lot of seams were pressed open. There were enough leftover strips to make the majority of the quilt which was very nice.

My quilt measures 56" by 64" and will be long arm quilted. I'm not sure who or where this quilt will be gifted but it's nice to have a finished quilt ready to go when you need a gift for a special person.

Scrappy Barn Quilt

The blocks are all pieced and sewn into rows. Now I'm sewing the rows together. I had thought I'd have sewn rows to show you but when they get sewn together incorrectly, they need to come apart again. Jack the ripper and I were busy last evening. Hopefully I'll have a flimsy to show you next week.

I added 10 blocks to the top and bottom of the quilt to make my quilt rectangular. The extra blocks just follow the zigzag design.

String X Flimsy

The string X flimsy is finished.

After looking at quilts on other blogs, I decided I need to start using more colorful background fabrics. I had plenty of this Kona spring green fabric in the solids box so I used it. It turned out quite nice.

My string X measures  62 by 87". It will be donated to the MCC comforter bash to be knotted. The 2020 bash was cancelled of course but the November 2021 knotting should work out.

Some of the strings were pieced together. Most of the strips used were 1-1/4" strips and left from the scrappy barn quilt I pieced in November. I did use some 1-1/2" strips too. For the pointed corners I used triangles cut from other projects.

Muslin was used for the foundation piecing. Some of the muslin was a bit heavier, it maybe slightly challenging to stick the needles through the layers for knotting.

String X is a free pattern found on Bonnie Hunter's site.

There are still a lot of strips left. They'll be in time out for awhile until I'm ready to make the next string x.

Applique Progress

My focus this week has mainly been on the scrappy barn quilt but I did get some applique time.

There are two blues in the larger flower but they're too close in color. I'm not changing them though, leaves should happen this week.

Puss in the Corner Progress

The alternate pink/brown blocks are pieced for puss in the corner. I've started arranging the blocks on the display floor but I don't have room to distribute all the blocks at one time.

There are enough blocks arranged to sew 9 diagonal rows and I'm starting that process but I won't sew those rows into a section yet. I need to add brown setting triangles. I think I have enough brown fabric left from the border of scrappy barn quilt, if not, I'll pick up more the next time I go to the grocery store.

I had pulled the first two blocks of three diagonal rows on the top left side and took them to the sewing machine. Then I remembered I didn't take a picture, so I did. I didn't lay those blocks back down.

I've used all the original fabrics leftover from Wilfred & Cloves. I've pulled fabrics from the stash that will look good, not necessarily exact match but close enough. Some of these fabrics were in the ugly class (to me anyway!) but look much better when cut in small squares and sashed.

The Wilfred & Cloves pattern is found in Creating Heirlooms One Stitch at a Time by Carolyn Konig.
