Scrappy Sprouts

Another of my carry-over projects (started in 2020) for RSC is scrappy sprouts. At the end of January, I arranged all my blocks on my display floor to get an idea of what I was doing. Unfortunately I didn't think to take a picture.

I decided my dark blocks weren't dark enough so that's what I'll be making this year.

I've made 4 deep dark teal blocks.

Here is a photo of all of my teal blocks. 

I did wonder if they would blend together if they were made a year apart. I think they do, I also think they'll work well any of the other colors.

I lost sleep over this quilt the night I pieced these blocks. I woke up during the night and started planning how I was going to arrange all the blocks. 

Then I started thinking about the flowers for the top of the sprouts. Not all of the sprout quilts I've seen have added flowers but I want to. I've seen Dresden or sunflowers but I think I'm going to go with the flower design by Krista of poppyprint. Isn't that flower lovely?

I remember viewing someone's sprout quilt that had clouds and a sun in the sky, very pretty. I don't remember who it was and I didn't bookmark the post. I do remember clicking on the post from the RSC linkup.

I don't think I'm going to do clouds and the sun though, the sprouts and flowers are enough for me.

Double Delight

The first group of 3.5" square in a square blocks for the rolling stone blocks are finished, all 256 of them!

I needed to cut more yellow squares and mistakenly cut them 1/8" smaller than they should have been. I may need to remake some of them, they don't look quite square but I'll worry about that when I'm sewing the blocks together.

There was no problem with squaring them up, they were definitely oversized!

Next to sew is the next group of 3.5" squares, the outside corner blocks. Once those blocks are completed, I can sew the rolling stone blocks together.

Flowers in the Winter

I've started to write this post in July 2021. It's a lovely bright sunny day. The grass is green and flowers are blooming. Even though the forecast for the next 10 days is hot with humidity, I'm a happy person. I love summer!

I don't like winter very well, I especially hate ice! This post will be published in the winter sometime, probably in February when there have been too many dreary gray days.

I've taken pictures of flowers to remind me and you that summer will be coming, the sun will shine again and the flowers will be blooming.

It's August now and the flowers are still blooming. The phlox smells wonderful!

The flowers make me smile. This is what we're dealing with after the 12" of snow we received last week.

This is a picture of the sledding hill.

The grandsons just leave the sledding equipment under the tree. Grandpa often has to stop and store them more safely so they don't get driven on.

As soon as it stops snowing, the rabbits are out running around again.

While it is snowing, the rabbits seek shelter under the bushes in my flower beds. They also fertilize my bushes!

Looking west across the fields, snow as far as you can see! Spring is on the way though, I just registered for the April Jane Stickle retreat!

Hearts & Wreaths

The 11th block for Hearts & Wreaths has been appliqued. Of course I think this is the prettiest one so far!

Several weeks ago I took pictures of all the crib quilts I quilted and hung outside on the clothesline. Several people commented on the snow they saw in the photos. Those little clumps were just what were left from a prior snow, not very pretty.

This is snow! When the sun shines, it's really bright because it reflects off the snow. When it's overcast, it looks like this, gray/brown/black silhouettes. 

Around midnight the other night, I looked out the bathroom window and saw two rabbits sitting in the snow. They must have been waiting for the rest of the gang to show up to party because this is what it looked like the next morning!

(Since I wrote this post earlier last week, we received 12" of snow!)

Dancing Stars

For 2022, I'm going to finish RSC projects, not start new ones. One of the projects I've carried over into 2022 in Dancing Stars.

I've made 8 sawtooth blocks in teal, I don't think you can really call any of the color aqua.

Of course my favorite group of 4 are the blue teal which is the first picture. They look more blue on my display wall!

More Double Delight

I know I said in my last post I was going to sew all of the yellow square/square blocks for Double Delight but I changed my mind. I wanted to see what the rolling stone blocks looked like if I didn't use the same fabric on the bottom part of the blocks. I pieced 6 more blocks to see what I thought.

I think I'll keep on piecing them this way. I don't know that it really makes a difference except for maybe the block with the darker blocks. I kind of like that one but I only cut enough HST's for that block.

The display is rather wonky with the one off block on the right side. What do you think, does it make a difference if the bottom part of the yellow square/square is a different fabric? The bottom left block is the original block with the same fabric on all four sides.

There are some fabrics in this quilt that will be the same in each rolling stone block, the yellow in the square/square and the bright blue stars. The outside corner squares will all be dark blues but not all the same fabric. The background fabric is the same in the quilt and the double 9 patch blocks but the 9 patches were pieced with a variety of light fabrics.

Double Delight

For my first quilt project of 2022, I've decided on Double Delight. Double Delight was a Quiltville Mystery (it's down at the bottom of the list) from years ago. I thought it was from 2008 but that's the copyright date at the top of the instructions. The post is dated 2005 so I really have no idea what year this mystery was from.

I'm making my quilt larger than Bonnie's instructions specify. I've been making 3" finished blue 9 patches off and on for several years and had a whole basket of them ready to go. For my size quilt, I need 42 double 9 patch blocks which will finish at 9".

Bonnie's mysteries usually consist of two blocks, the main showy block and an alternate block that often makes a chain of some kind. The 9 patches are the alternate block. 

I had pieced one of the rolling stone blocks just to see if I liked my selected fabrics and I do!

The blocks are on point for this quilt which is why I did so for the picture. The rolling stone block does rather overpower the 9 patch blocks, hopefully everything will look fine when the quilt is finished.

Now to start piecing the main blocks. The center 9 patch blocks are already pieced of course. The next section will be the yellow center square in a square blocks. 

I need 56 finished rolling stone blocks which means I need 224 square/square blocks. There are always a lot of pieces in Bonnie's mysteries.
