Noah's Ark, the Last Finish of 2020

The hand quilting on Noah's Ark crib quilt was completed this week. I washed it to remove the markings before measuring which is 41" by 48". I think it looks really cute.

This was a lovely panel and quilted very nicely. I would be tempted to buy another one to have on hand but Calico Point has sold out of this panel.

Number 12 Sulky thread was used for the hand quilting. For the backing fabric I used this blue brown cow fabric I bought years ago. Very thin polyester batting was used for the center. I like a thinner batting in a crib quilt because if it is too thick, it's not cuddly and babies need to be cuddled.

I actually finished marking the quilting lines on blue Stars Around the Garden . . . and . . . I put it in the quilting frame yesterday! Pictures next Sunday.

Noah's Ark

The hand quilting has progressed to the sky. The clamshells quilt very fast.

Are you wondering how the marking progress is going on blue stars around the garden? Very slowly. My goal is to get it in the quilting frame on New Year's Day, will I succeed? We'll find out later.

Hand Quilting Noah's Ark

I quilted across Noah's Ark this week and finished the last of the animals in the Ark.

I'll wash the markings out after the quilting and binding is finished.

Progress!

Hand quilting happened this week. Most of the center of the quilt has been quilted.

And  . . . drumroll please . . . the applique on the border of blue Stars Around the Garden has been completed!

Blue stars is supposed to be the next quilt in the hand quilting frame but it will take me several week to get this marked for quilting. It measures 90" by 106". This is the 3rd quilt I've made from this pattern but the first time I've made the appliqued border version.

Applique & Hand Quilting

I was determined to make progress on my hand projects this week and I did!

First the hand quilting. I binged watched season 4 of the Crown last Sunday then finished the last  couple episodes the next day. I quilted all the way across the quilt. I originally thought this would take longer because of all the detail around the animals, but all the drama kept me alert.

Another corner of blue Stars Around the Garden has been appliqued, I'm picking up speed with the applique.

After the applique is finished, I will mark the quilting. Blue stars is the next quilt in the hand quilting frame.

I noticed these birds in these trees last week. They were really singing away.

Noah's Quilting has Started

I've started the quilting on Noah's Ark crib quilt. The outside border and the blue plaid border are both quilted with Sulky #12  variegated gray thread. I also stitched in the ditch along the green border with the same thread.

After I rolled, the next several borders were stitched in the ditch even though they weren't pieced. Again the gray variegated thread was used.

Yes, the green border looks very crooked, I had to even the edge of the plaid but I didn't do a very good job. This is a functional quilt, not a show quilt, I doubt the child will notice.

After the ditch quilting was finished in this row, I started quilting the waves. The panel has the waves outlined with a thin black line. I'm using a solid dark gray thread for that, again Sulky #12 thread. I think you can see where I've stitched. I also outlined the fish.

This crib quilt isn't going to be closely quilted since it's a panel, not pieced. I could do more quilting if I wanted to but I don't.

Noah's Ark is in the Frame

I had originally planned for blue Stars Around the Garden to be the next quilt into the hand quilting frame but the applique is going slow. I do have the stems appliqued on all four corners but no photo to show you.

A year ago I bought a Noah's Ark panel for a crib quilt and added simple borders to make it larger. I had thought I would quilt it on my sewing machine when I was machine quilting last summer but decided not to. I want to use a variety of colored thread, it just wasn't worth the hassle. My machine quilting consists of very simple quilting.

It's in the hand quilting frame ready to start. After taking this picture I noticed I hadn't trimmed the batting off the bottom edge. (I've done that now. I save all the little bits and pieces of batting and stick it in a bag. When the bag is full, I donate to a shop that resells the batting for stuffing.)

I don't use a large backing like some hand quilters so but on this quilt it's even less. I had a perfect fabric fort he back and didn't want to have to make it larger so I trimmed the quilt flimsy down a little. I have approximately 1" of backing on each size. I wouldn't do this with a large quilt but it will work fine for a small project.

I don't cut my batting to size but trim it as I roll. There is nothing more frustrating to have cut your batting then have it be too small! Been there, done that.

I will be using #12 weight Sulky thread for quilting thread. The outside border is going to be quilted with the variegated  gray that I have used in several other projects.

Retreat Project #2, Noah's Ark Crib Quilt

I needed a quick and easy project after the marathon sewing of the snowballs. This was a last minute just in case project I had stuck in my bag, I was so glad I did!

I don't work very often with panels but my 3 year old grandson spotted this at Calico Point and thought I should buy it. I'm sure he thought it would be for him, wrong! It going to be a cute crib quilt to have on hand to gift to someone who needs it. Don't worry though, my grandson has more than enough quilts for his bed.

This picture isn't the greatest, forgot to take one at retreat so I took a quick picture at home.

You see the narrow green border? I added that and the outside borders too. See, quick and easy, it was fun to make something fast. Right now it measures 45" by 52" but some of that border is going to be trimmed off after quilting.

This little guy will be quilted on my home sewing machine sometime in 2020. I think I know how I want to do the quilting, I'll see if my ideas can happen.
