Nine Patches & Turquoise Squares

I had planned to give into the split 9 patch project and just work on those blocks until I had the 224 blocks I needed but then I changed my mind because of Jayne.

I enjoy making 9 patches of every size. When I finish a quilt and have fabrics left, I often cut the fabric into strips and make 9 patches.

Several years ago I sorted through them and pulled 3" finished patches for a quilt and bought the alternate turquoise fabric to go with it.

Like I said, I had planned to work on the split 9 patch blocks but then Jayne posted about a 9 patch sew along on her blog. I thought about joining in using 2" strips from the box  and making 4.5" finished 9 patches. Then I thought about how I already have the 9 patches pieced for 2 or 3 projects. I decided to finish one of those projects.

Here is 9 patches & turquoise squares except in my pictures the turquoise looks blue. He measures 61" by 83".

For this quilt I used 3" finished 9 patches with light corners. Its so nice and bright!  These pictures just don't do justice. This project was on my list of quilts to make this year and it's ready for quilting.

Another blue beauty! I remembered it was time for me to comment, Gretchen. I read all your posts and find it so inspiring especially your hand quilting which is immaculate.

Another wonderful quilt. So bright and happy and you must be do pleased that the nine patches and turauilse fabric have been used up. Wonder how many other nine patch blocks you have patiently waiting in the wings, I know I've got several lots myself.

Beautiful quilt ... and even more awesome if we saw it in it's true turquoise colour. It always amazes me, as to how how the simplest of quilts still come forth and make a statement!

Curious?? .... when you do the 9-Ps sporadically, do you use the same white as a constant? Or just whatever white scraps you have leftover from other things? THANK YOU!!

Very nice!

The light fabric is not all the same, there are different whites, creams and prints. Also, I did not lay the blocks out before sewing. I did sort the 9 patches into colors then tried to make sure the colors were varied but still some of the same colors ended up beside each other. The quilt still looks great to me!

Very very cool quilt! I'm a blue fan anyway but this looks really good with the turquoise - great choice. I love how you make the nine-patches with leftovers...I usually use mine into small cot quilts for the NICU at our local hospital (improvising from whatever size pieces I have left) but I like your idea of making a stash of nine-patches to later use in a scrappy quilt. Going on my to-do list!

Beautiful quilt! If you don't mind me asking, what turquoise fabric did you use?

The turquoise fabric was Kona brand, I don't know the color name. It's a pretty color!
