A Comforter for MCC

One of the recipients of quilts during Sarah's Hands2Help 2023 drive this year was MCC. Debbie contacted me when I showed several MCC comforters that I finished binding. She was planning to make a comforter for MCC but wouldn't have it finished before the Hands2Help deadline. I told her MCC needs comforter tops all the time, she could send the top to me and I would see it would be donated to MCC facility in my town.

I received Debbie's comforter top this week in the mail and I want to show it to you. 

Isn't it pretty! This flimsy will be knotted by volunteers then the edge will be turned then finished sometime this coming winter or maybe at the MCC comforter bash! There are so many places in need of comforters, overseas and right here in the US.

Moda Love Flimsy

The Moda Love flimsy is finished and measures 63" by 83". To finish the center, I added a cream border, a checkerboard border and finally a brown outside border.

A dark brown outer border would have looked better but someone gave me yards of the medium brown fabric so I used it.

This is a not so great photo of the flimsy on the porch glider.

This flimsy is a comforter top and will be donated to the MCC comforter bash to be knotted this fall if life is somewhat back to normal.

The star center was pieced from a charm pack which fits in with Sarah's Charmed I'm Sure!, Hands 2 Help 2020 challenge.

Sometime I will use this design for another charity quilt but I think I'll add log cabin blocks to the top and bottom for length.

I've had these flannel pieces waiting for several months to have the edges finished by zigzagging. They're finally finished so there are 4 large sized receiving blankets washed and ready for delivery to the Family Christian Family Development Center in Nappanee to be used in the well baby program.

More Hands 2 Help 2019 Challenge

Two more flimsys are finished for the Hands 2 Help 2019 Challenge. They will be donated to the MCC Comforter Bash along with the other two I completed in April! They don't need to be quilted because they'll be knotted at the 'bash'.

The string stars that I started sewing together at retreat are finished and sewn into a 60" by 86" flimsy. 

And a clothesline view.

The other flimsy is a log cabin. It measures 61" by 83". It's OK if they're a little larger than the required 60" by 80" they request. They just can't be smaller than that size.

You can tell the dark strings came from the same box.

Here are some pictures from around the farm.

In spite of what the "experts" say, this bleeding heart loves the full sun on the west side of our house. 

It's about 3 feet tall and has been in this spot for many years.

This bleeding heart on the east side of the house has quite a ways to grow. It's  way behind the other one but when it starts blooming, it will bloom into July. It only gets direct light in the early morning.

These heifers are glad to be out on pasture. They love the fresh grass.

The bull is enjoying the grazing too.

It's the middle of May and farming should be going full force now but northern Indiana has had so much rain that we can't get in the fields. Enforced patience isn't fun!

Hands 2 Help 2019

I've signed up to join in with the Hands To Help 2019 Challenge.

I participate in the MCC Comforter Bash and make comforter tops for them anyway.

Two very simple 60" by 80" comforter tops have been completed for this challenge. I don't need to quilt these tops, they'll be knotted.

For my pattern, I cut fabrics left from other projects into 5" blocks which I used in the center of each block. The sashing on the sides are cut at 2-1/2". The block finished at 8 1/2". 

Yes, some of those squares are string blocks, anything goes for the centers. Crumb blocks would be wonderful too.

Feel free to use this easy pattern and feel free to modify it for your own use.
