Churn Dash Diva

For the past several months I've been participating in Chooky Blue's Churn Dash SAL. I'm pleased to say my flimsy is finished!

I thought I had the blocks arranged so like fabrics wouldn't be next to each other but I see that didn't happen!

Here is a close up of the lovely pink border fabric and the dark brown sashing.

I decided to use civil war fabrics because I have a well filled tub of them. Originally I was going to use a variety of colors but decided to continue with the pink/brown combination when I saw how lovely they were looking.

An on point setting was used with 2" finished dark brown sashing in between the blocks. The pink cornerstone fabric I've had for years and there is still enough left for another project.

After the brown border was attached, the quilt started talking to me. She said she wanted the outside pink striped fabric to be mitered. Okay, I can do that. If you look closely, you can see part of the mitered corner in the picture below.

Then she started telling me how she wanted to be quilted, hand quilting of course with a outside feather border that has a scalloped edge! The churn dash blocks are supposed to be quilted in an overall design.

I asked how about long arm quilting with an overall Baptist Fan design? That suggestion was promptly refused.

So, that's the plan, hand quilting, outside feather border with a scalloped border. She did agree to waiting a year while I quilt another quilt that has been waiting longer, age before beauty you know. Of course I do need to finish hand quilting Welsh Beauty first.

This is why I've name this quilt, Churn Dash Diva. I've had other quilts talk to me before but never this demanding.

Churn Dash Fabrics

I know I said I was going to take a blogging break for the rest of August but I couldn't resist. I made it to Caroline's Cotton Cottage and bought the fabric to finish my churn dash quilt!

Of course they didn't have the fabrics in stock that I had imagined in my mind but I do like this striped dark brown fabric.

There was absolutely NO brown and pink flowered fabric so that idea went down the drain but they did have this lovely pink fern fabric left from the Gene Stratton Porter line. This fabric was used and designed for the Wildflower Woods quilt and will become the outside border of my quilt. Since the dark brown fabric stripes are so subtle, I don't think having striped pink fabric will be too much.

Now I need to find time to sew the quilt into the flimsy stage.

I'm participating in Chookyblue's Churn Dash Block SAL, check out her blog for other SAL participants.

This definitely is the last post for August!

Churn Dash Blocks

I'm participating in Chooky Blue's churn dash sew along. Check out her blog for links to other participating quilters.

Twenty churn dash blocks were pieced in August. Now I have the 50 blocks I need for my quilt.

I don't have fabric for the sashing, I guess this means I'll have to do some shopping! I'm hoping I can find a brown stripe, the cornerstones will be pink stars but that's not definite. Wouldn't a pink and brown floral make a lovely outside border?

The first store I'll check is Caroline's Cotton Corner in Rome City. If they don't have what I'm looking for, I'll see what I can find at Lolly's in Shipshewana.

More Churn Dash Blocks

Fourteen more churn dash blocks have been pieced for Chooky's SAL.

I've pieced a total of 30 blocks, 20 more are needed. I'll work on those in August.

I know how I want to set the blocks but I need to shop for sashing fabric. I think I can handle that easily enough.

Most of the fabric used in these blocks was given to me by my friend when she moved, thanks Deanna!

Churn Dash SAL

Since Wildflower Woods is a flimsy, I can make progress on other projects. So far 16 churn dash blocks have been pieced for Chooky Blue's SAL.

I do have the HST's cut for 14 more HST's. It was very fast to cut the pieces using the GO!Me cutter. I'm going to need a total of 50 blocks.

I didn't realize how much pink and brown fabrics I had in the civil war tub until I started rummaging through it. I had planned to make my churn dash blocks in a variety of colors but I've changed my mind.

All of the HST blocks are brown fabrics and the sides are going to be pink fabrics. There will be a variety of background fabrics.

My friend Deanna gave me a bunch of civil war fabrics before she moved to Utah. I had forgotten how fabric there was.

The blocks finish at 9".

Churn Dash SAL

I'm starting a new SAL with Chookyblue being the enabler, encourager and instigator!

My quilt is going to be a combination of designs. Here is a link to Chooky's quilt and here is a link to Tazzie's quilt. My quilt is a combination of the two, hopefully I'll be able to make the quilt in my mind materialize into a physical quilt.

The blocks are going to finish at 9". Since the GO!Me cutter I won in the drawing for participating in Denise's SAL, comes with a 3" finished HST die, it will be put to immediate use.

First I ran the 6 layers of fabric through the cutter.

Now I've removed the plastic cover and you can see the cut HST sections.

Here is what it looks like with the excess outer edge fabric removed.

I didn't have time to sew a block together but here is a preview.

I did take the time to do some math, I need 30 blocks. This isn't going to be a huge king sized quilt but a small queen sized quilt.

As of now, all the HST corners are going to be brown fabrics but I do plan to use a variety of other colors for the straight section. This is also a good way to use up various pieces of background fabrics.

I'm going to try to get all the brown fabrics cut for the HST's so they'll be ready to sew.
