I was tired of looking at the fabric vortex pieces on the design wall so I unpacked the box that went with the blocks and started sewing.
So many little pieces and what a mess!
I sewed and sewed and sewed, for 4 days I sewed and didn't seem to make progress, the mess just got worse! This was driving me crazy so I finally said enough.
This is what I came up with, the flimsy is 44" by 61".
I wasn't sure what I would do with this quilt after it was quilted but a grandson spoke up and put his claim on it. That's the advantage of living close to grandma.
Here is a link to Amanda Jean's Scrap-Vortex sew along. This link is to week 5, you'll find the other weeks under the sew-along tab at the top of the page. I can't believe she had a mess like this in her studio for 5 weeks!
Here is a link to Jo's Diamond Crumb blocks tutorial on YouTube.
All these pieces were on the card table so I cut 4.5" by 8.5" rectangles from newspaper and sewed the strips on them. Somday I'll sew more of these rectangles until I have enough for a compassion quilt. I have a box with random strips.

I love the quilt you made! It's really lively and colorful. I'm lucky because we have a free table at the guild. I can donate scraps and blocks I don't want and someone will scoop them up. Anyway, I love that your grandson loves the quilt too! Have a great day!
What a glorious quilt! And how fun that your grandson claimed it. I like your setup for sewing and pressing. I have to walk a whole 3 feet away - lol!
I miss Amanda Jean and am glad she left her blog open. I just went to the first week of her Scrap Vortex and was surprised to read she actually puts aside scraps she knows she will never use and donates them. In my mind she never met a scrap she didn't like, so that was an eye-opener for me. Since Amanda Jean gave me permission, I'll weed out my blue scraps for donation today because I can't even close the bin!
Sometimes I get tired of the same ole scraps I think to just srw them.all up in a mad rage 🤣 your spontaneous quilt turned out great & making your grandson happy is a double bonus!
That's fabulous, Gretchen! I love all the color and shape in a scrap vortex quilt. I do know about the mess it creates, having made one myself. So glad your grandson likes it, too!
Great job managing all those little scraps, Gretchen! So cool that your Grandson wants it!!!
That is wild and yep, looks like something a grandson will love.
What a fun quilt!
I love scrappy quilt s like this! Cool that your grandson immediately claimed it. You clear the scrap decks and he gets the warm of a grandmother's labor and love. Perfect!
What a fun colourful quilt this is - I can see why your Grandson wants it. xx
Your mess made a fantastic quilt, Gretchen. My sewing area is always like that, baskets of scraps everywhere.
I'm with you--that kind of mess would be too much for me. But your quilt top sure turned out pretty! Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

Oh my Gretchen, I cannot believe you spent 4 days sewing on this mess. It's a wonder that you still have your mind intact. I am surprised that you didn't throw it all out after two days. I know which grandson said he wanted the quilt. Good for him. Enjoy quilting again. Your sister in OH.
I can't believe I did either! I haven't quilted it yet but will sometime this spring. I told Andrew it's not a full sized quilt but he said that was okay, he wanted it anyway.
wonderful scrappy goodness
It may have begun as a mess, but that is a great quilt now. I can understand why your grandson wanted it. Great job!
Just think, if you hadn't sewn for four days with that "mess," your grandson would never have laid claim to it and those sneaky scraps would still be lurking in their containers! It is a wonderful finish. . .regardless of the mess getting it to a flimsy created!
So cool that the grandson claimed it - I love when that happens, and go you for using SO many scraps up!! that is awesome!!
Perfect scrappy love for a grandchild. Fabulous. Glad you put up with the mess of scraps.
Haha, I have made a few that made me say, "never again!" Looks good though!
I’ve made several scrap vortex quilts. Most have been given away as baby quilts. I’m probably due to make another flannel one as the flannel scraps are out of control, again! I love your quilt and also that your grandson has claimed it. Gail at the cozy quilter.
Gretchen that is one bright happy quilt. No wonder your grandson claimed it. I’m with you scraps under 1” square should not be repurposed 😉. Thank you for sharing your post on To Do Tuesday.
My vortex quilt was a hot mess. Hopefully it turned out to be a nice charity quilt for someone. I get your wish to not do one again. Ha.
A quilt is always loved by someone, and I'm glad that this one is loved by your grandson! I love it too, very joyful and modern! Yes, I can see what you think about mess and little scraps ;) Thank you for sharing your beautiful blocks and linking up.
Nice to have grandsons to quilt for! And I am with you on on throwing out the leftover scraps. I found myself doing the same thing lately.
Hi Gretchen, at least being tired of looking at the vortex quilt on your design wall encouraged you to finish it! I save a lot of scraps but when I'm actually sewing with them, I get ruthless and through out off of the tiny pieces. Enough is enough!!! I'm glad that you grandson wanted it. That's always a pleasure :-) Thanks for linking up to I Quilted This!
Hallo Gretchen,
wie schön, dass wir diesen Quilt sehen dürfen! Das war wirklich ein großes Restenähen.
Aber es ist eine gute Idee und ich werde mal dem Link folgen.
Vielen Dank und herzliche Grüße!
Elke
The quilt looks beautiful, and I like the mix of colorful fabrics. Great. ♥
