Stonefields, Block 50

I took a break from hand quilting to applique block 50 of Stonefields which is called The Wreath. This was a challenging block for me to applique, all those in and out curves!

You have probably noticed that I often make two applique blocks instead of just one. One was enough of this design.

There were supposed to be teeny-tiny itty-bitty applique circles in the center of the flowers. I chose to add a bunch of french knots in yellow. Yellow french knots did brighten the block up and were much easier to make than those circles! The blocks finish at 6".

Chris and Rebecca are also stitching the Stonefields blocks, good luck ladies with those little circles!

Stonefields is designed by Susan Smith. Susan has designated this block as the center block of the quilt. I'm not sure about that, this block may not even make it into the quilt, I'm not satisfied with my applique on the inner curves.

Even though this block is supposed to be the center block, I'm not halfway completed making the blocks. There are a total of 121 blocks in the quilt.

I was in Wakarusa last week and took a picture of the quilt garden, it's ready for the long winter rest.

The wreath might have proved challenging but how pretty it looks with those sweet flowers. The french knots are a good choice.

What a delicate appliqué block, with lots of curves! You did a great job, and I love the French knots in the center, very pretty and clever! Your little flowers are elegant and delicate, like porcelain. It's beautiful. But yes, I understand that one block is enough ;)) Thank you for sharing your Stonefields blocks and linking up.

I can’t imagine appliquéing tiny circles in the middle of those flowers. French knots were the way to go! Such a pretty block. Gail at the cozy quilter

Dear Gretchen, Stonefields has been on my list, decided I have so many more projects to finish. So instead I can admire your beauty in blues, it is looking wonderful and so beautiful.

Actually, I love that you did the yellow french knots in the center. It makes the flowers look like Forget-Me-Nots. Your applique is stunning!

Those French knots are a great solution to avoid the tiny applique. This is a pretty block.

You make the best choices with these blocks. Those French knots were the perfect substitution!

Those little French knots are such an exquisite detail, Gretchen! What, only one of this block for you? Hahaha! It's a beauty for sure. Now I'm curious how tiny the circles were meant to be, but I can't check my pattern because I sealed it up in a cardboard jail so it can go on the moving truck on Wednesday. AAAARRRGH!!!!!! And also YIKES!

You have done well with those inwards curves, I struggle with them too. Love the little French knots. x

Love the pretty French knots - always a plus in my book. I like the look of a garden all set for a winter nap. :)

That is a beautiful block, and I think the French knots are much prettier than the tiny little circles would have been. Good design choice!

It's beautiful. Love the design, and I think your little yellow french knots made it perfect. Spotted you on a mutual friends blog and thought I'd pop in for a visit. It's always fun to meet new bloggers.

It's a beautiful block, but with all those pieces it had to be a lot of work. The French knots work really wall as the centers.

It is such a sweet block, Gretchen. I love the use of those pretty French knots for the centers. And what pretty colours too.
