I started prepping the alternate chain blocks before I left for my vacation. I'm using red fabrics for the chain.
I didn't have a lot of scraps to use for the chains, most of the scrap pieces have been used in making 4 patch blocks. I used small pieces of fabrics that were too large to be called 'scraps' and was able to do mostly strip piecing.
A lot of the white background fabric was leftovers from cut off quilt backing fabric. I did piece one chain block to show you.
All the sections have been organized on a tray, ready to go to retreat.
I'm not sure how many blocks I need but I do know I'll need at least 100 blocks. If I figured correctly 😉, there should be enough sections for 100 blocks on the tray. The longer white pieces will be used for more 9 patch blocks or cut into the larger rectangles.
I did surround the single chain block with posy blocks to get an idea of what it will look like. It would be easier to visualize if I had sewn more of the chains but that will happen at retreat.
Probably not all the chain blocks will be pieced at retreat but hopefully I'll have enough pieced so that I can figure out how many more I need. I'll take another project along to retreat though, just in case it is needed.
Garden Party was designed by Bonnie Hunter and can be found in the Addicted to Scraps book. I did find a website to purchase only the pattern.

How nice to be prepared! That is an impressive tray there. Is the retreat nearby? Hope you are having a great week.
Wow! Small blocks with lots of pieces! Are you hand or machine piecing them? It's going to make a heck of a bed quilt! Love the colors!!!
The retreat is the middle of November. I knew when I got home from my trip that I would be way behind in all projects. I prepped these blocks so they'd be ready to sew.
I'm machine piecing the blocks, so much faster than hand piecing. This quilt is a good pattern to use various small leftover fabrics.
This is going to be a fabulous quilt!
You are a rock star at planning and thinking ahead! It is such a beautiful quilt and great use of scraps. Your fabrics are going to make this quilt amazing!!
What a lot of pieces but that's Bonnie Hunter. ❤️ I love scrappy quilts and this is going to be so pretty! Can't wait until November when you can share what you've done. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss. https://www.inquiringquilter.com/questions/2025/10/14/wednesday-wait-loss-454
That looks like a great retreat task. Going to make a great quilt. xx
I love your organization; I am sure that helps to complete the project easily. I like having a focus project for a retreat. With all that concentrated amount of time, it is great to get a project accomplished. I love the blocks you have finished already.
What a great project to take to retreat!
So impressed with your planning and preparations for the quilting retreat. Should be easy to set up when you get there. Also, since the piecing is relatively easy you will be able to chat as you sew.
I never take challenging projects along to retreat, there's too much visiting and commotion going on to concentrate!
Good preparation is everything—isn't it?
Nice blocks... I'm looking forward to seeing how things develop.
Best wishes from Viola
What a colorful quilt that is going to be. The red chains will ground it beautifully. Enjoy your retreat.
Neat organization for the retreat! These little blocks are colorful, they will make a happy quilt. The red chain blocks look very pretty, you are going to have fun at the retreat! Thank you for sharing your work in progress and linking up.
this will be a fun one - but that is A LOT of blocks! Love how organized you are!
Hi Gretchen, Have fun on your retreat - you're so well organised! Those blocks are going to look great together. Thanks for sharing on FM Mavericks.
Gretchen it looks like you have a perfect project for your retreat. How good to be that organized. I often find myself scrambling the morning before I go to the Guild for a Quilting Day to get projects together and always take 2-4 projects so it can depend on who is there needing help as to what I work on. Thank you for sharing on To Do Tuesday. 😃 Carol
