Frosted Trees

Today's post is not about quilting but about weather and the trees.

On New Year's day we received freezing rain. The temperature was cold enough the rain dripped/froze on the trees making little icicles 2" - 3" in length. The trees were very pretty but the roads were extremely hazardous and there were power outages in our area. Our electric stayed on.

Trees with ice. I should have take a close up of the icicles but I didn't.
Sunday morning, the 3rd, it started to snow, a heavy wet crunchy snow. Crunchy snow means when you walk in it, it crunches. The trees got a frosting of snow over the ice, now they're really pretty! But a wet heavy snow means even more weight on those tree branches which means more power outages. Again we kept our power.
These are the black walnut trees along the west fence row of the south heifer pasture. I often see squirrels running along the branches and jumping from tree to tree. They didn't do any of that New Year's weekend.
The east side of the pasture along the driveway. The cattle aren't outside in the pastures during the winter.
Can you figure out what this picture is? It's a close up of my clothesline. The ice/snow layer is an inch thick and it's wound around the line!
This is another picture of the same heifer pasture, those trees are on the south edge, along the road. In the winter this is the sledding hill. The grandsons went sledding later but I didn't get pictures.
I planted this tree 35 plus years ago when it was only 6" tall.
This is looking south down our driveway. I'm standing in the curve of the drive.
I'm still standing in the curve of the drive but looking west towards the house.

That branch leaning over on the fence isn't broken. By evening the temperature rose, the snow/ice on the trees melted and that tree stood back up.

Frosted trees don't happen all the time, I'm glad I could share the pictures with you.

Wonderful pictures, I'm happy to see them. Thanks.
Here it is snowing again and it is wonderful in the forest now.
I love the snow on the trees ... a fairytale landscape.
Greetings to you. All the best. Viola

I love, love frosted trees! I think one of the benefits of living in a snowy area is seeing the trees covered in ice and snow -- as long as the branches stay away from the power lines of course! I'm glad to hear that you kept your power through it all!

Beautiful pictures of your place! It's amazing how different the world looks under a layer of snow and ice.

Wonderful pictures Gretchen, but I can't imagine how is to live in a place with such a low temperature. Just looking those pics made my feet feel cold. LOL
Thanks for posting. Stay safe and warm.

Hi Gretchen! WOW! Your photos are gorgeous. We see this all the time, of course, but I still enjoy it. I'm go glad you didn't lose power or had to go out driving in it. It's also a blessing that none of your trees were damaged. Thanks for linking up today. ~smile~ Roseanne

Summer is my favorite season, I love the heat even if it is humid. Winter has it's own beauty but I have to look harder to see it. Somedays though it's easy to see.

This is life in northern Indiana, very changeable weather.

One of the perks of working at home is no driving on roads when it's icy. It's amusing to watch the traffic on the road. Some vehicles creep along slowly then you see a vehicle (it's usually a pickup) goes tearing down the road at normal speed.

Beautiful pictures! On January 3 we had beautiful frosted trees in southeast Iowa. They were just beautiful! I had to take a couple pictures of them. I am thankful we didn't have the ice. We have had that in the past as well, and have been without power for almost a week when it happened a few years ago. Do you live on a paved road or a rock road, as we call it in Iowa. We are on a farm on a rock road.

Beautiful photos. We’ve hardly had any winter weather here at all except for the cold. We haven’t even had enough snow to cover all the grass so everything is brown. Your place is beautiful.

Beautiful! I love a good ice storm, though I admit after going thru a really bad one abou 15 years ago (lost power for 5 days!), I do get a little concerned. And prepared! Thanks for sharing the pics! My brother got a little of that storm.

We still have some snow but not complete coverage. Now we see the dreary winter green/brown grass but we do have sunshine today!

We live on a blacktop road. In Indiana we call them gravel roads. There aren't too many in our county anymore. Thanks for commenting.

What a beautiful place you live in!! I often wonder what it would be like to live in a snow country. We don't have snow where we are in Southern California. I we really want to see snow, we have to drive up to the mountain area which is about 70-80 miles away. Right now I just enjoy your pictures instead. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.

Thanks for taking the time to upload all the pics. Beautiful. I looked at them a couple of times. Beautiful to look at and dangerous if the limbs go down from the weight. I hope your lights stay on! Brrrrr
