May String Along

I'm getting back in to the swing of things here at home since the Jane Stickle retreat last weekend. I haven't touched my sewing machine since I've been home but I do have something to show.

My choice for strings has been to make log cabin blocks. For a change, I've been sewing string blocks.

I used telephone book paper for backing. Never again! Next time I'll use thin fabric, too much time is wasted in removing the paper. And Yes! I did use a small stitch.

At the retreat I sewed some of the blocks together. I had seen a quilt made with string stars somewhere online. I like the way the quilt looked so that's what I decided to make.

The stars are 28" unfinished. I've completed 2 stars so far, I need to make 4 more.

I like how these are turning out.

  1. Your string stars are so pretty. Instead of phone book pages I'm going to try piecing my next batch of strings onto used dryer sheets. A year or so ago I made a test block, quilted it, then washed and dried. It seemed to work just fine. I also hate the thought of tearing off the papers, it makes a mess and weakens the edges of the seams no matter how small the stitches are.

    1. Dryer sheets are a good idea but I don't use them myself. I have some very thin fabric here that was in my mother's stash. I'm going to use that next. Thanks for your comment!

  2. I guess that is why I do not do string piecing that needs a foundation when I have done it I just sew strips together and then press and square up with no foundation

  3. What an amazing setting for the star block!! I really love it!
Using ugly or thin fabric for the foundation is a terrific idea.

  4. This string star is so lovely! I hate to sew on paper that needs to be removed afterwards. Now I have bought rolls with a thin rice paper that need not be removed.Thin fabric is also fine to use. :-)

  6. I love your string blocks you are making... sorry you aren't enjoying telephone book paper... I have used it myself and enjoyed it but I agree it isn't for everyone to enjoy... I listen to tunes or audio book and sew and rip and sew and rip! lol
I love how you have your strings going in different directions... very cute big blocks you are making :)
    Have a wonderful Friday! Kathi

  7. I love your colorful string stars. I don't enjoy ripping the paper either but I found that the phone book pages rip the best of any of them. I usually do it while on the phone or watching TV so I don't notice how long it takes, haha.

  8. Beautiful! I considered using a thin muslin as a foundation for my recent stringy finish, but I opted for newspaper. Is it weird that a part of me likes removing the paper?!

  15. Your string blocks made a beautiful star! I've been making string blocks with telephone book papers recently, just because I wanted to try it, and I can see why people don't like it! I'll probably go back to using some kind of thin fabric for strings, too.
