2016 Quilts

In January I decided to make quilts for the grandchildren.

2 of the grandsons received quilts made in the Majestic Mountains design, a Bonnie Hunter pattern.

The youngest granddaughter received a Scrappy Trip around the World and the next granddaughter received a Width of Fabric quilt.

My favorite of these quilts is the Scrappy 4-Patch quilt. This quilt went to the 2nd oldest granddaughter.

The last quilt was for the oldest granddaughter. By now I was running out of steam, so I made her a Zippy-Strippy.

I added a flange binding to make it zing!

A new grandson is arriving in August. DIL2 choose this Dotted Pinwheel quilt for him.

The other quilt went to my niece for her April baby.

I used up a jelly-roll I had on hand and made another Zippy-Strippy. I added snowflakes to this one and gifted it to DIL1.
Got to treat the DIL's the same, so I purchased another jelly-roll and made this Zippy-Strippy for DIL 2. I made some changes in the pattern for this quilt. I think Zippy-Strippys are normally just a bit too wide and not long enough. She finished at 59" x 84".

I quilted her on my sewing machine. I traced a stencil in the 2 light colored borders.

Several years ago I EPP'd this Fussy Cut Star top then hand quilted her in early spring. She finishes at 48" x 57 1/2"

Summer Lake Log Cabin quilt designed by Judy Martin. The pattern is found in her Log Cabin Quilt book. I purchased a kit from Lolly's Fabrics in Shipshewana years ago. I love how she has turned out. This log cabin quilt finishes at 95" square which I think is a rather awkward size for a quilt, but it is what it is. The colors that read as blue in the picture are actually purples.
The snail blocks in the center and the border are actually pieced the same as the log cabin blocks. It is just the placement of lights and darks that make a different design.

I also stitched both sides of the binding on my machine. The straight stitching on the back beside the binding doesn't bother me at all. I think it looks just fine. Tammy from Three Sisters Fabrics long-arm quilted this quilt.

The next quilt is Cherry Blossoms by Karen H. Her blog is Faeries and Fibres. (Click the heading Patterns by Karen H. She asks that people link to her blog, not directly to the patterns.)

This quilt is different colors than I normally use but I think she looks so peaceful and elegant. The 9-patches finished at 3" and the little HST are 1" finished. The fabrics for this quilt came entirely from my stash.

Karen had a plain fabric border on her quilt but I added a pieced border. I thought the border was needed to add a definite stop to the center, it looked too plain. I added a flange to the binding to add some bling! She finishes at 90" x 102". Tammy from Three Sisters Fabrics long-arm quilted this quilt.

Beautiful quilts Gretchen. I love them all. It was funny to read you are doing what I am doing regarding making quilts for the grandchildren. I love Bonnie's quilt and have that on my to do list. :-)

What makes those quilts even more special is the backing fabric is from my mother's stash. Every time the children sleep under the quilts, their great-grandmother is wrapping her arms around them. Most of the homespuns were her fabrics too. Thanks for stopping by.

Another amazing and beautiful show of your quilts. The Cherry Blossoms quilt is quite wonderful. I really admire that you hand quilt so many of your quilts.
