Slow Applique

The 3rd corner of blue Stars Around the Garden has been completed.

The circles in the center of the flowers are lightly padded with batting. I see I missed a leaf, will get that appliqued then the corner will truly be finished.

I did hand quilt a little on Noah's Ark this week but I forgot to take a picture, next week!

Happy Thanksgiving

Earlier this fall I was piecing autumn easy breezy blocks when I received a Thanksgiving panel via snail mail from Nanette. It was perfect as the center for these blocks. 

I pieced enough easy breezy blocks for a second flimsy too. This one measures 71" by 86" and the panel flimsy is 60-1/2" by 78".

These flimsies, along with binding, have been sent to one of the charities listed in Lori's September 25th post. They will quilt them. Here is a link to the post by Lori of Humble Quilts fame.

Still Sewing Rows

 

Another section of the puss in the corner quilt has been sewn together, just the 3 center rows to go.

I stacked some of the blocks in the bottom corner so I could use my chair again. Also a grandson wanted to play with the Lego's.

Applique & Hand Quilting

 I was determined to make progress on my hand projects this week and I did!

First the hand quilting. I binged watched season 4 of the Crown last Sunday then finished the last  couple episodes the next day. I quilted all the way across the quilt. I originally thought this would take longer because of all the detail around the animals, but all the drama kept me alert.

Another corner of blue Stars Around the Garden has been appliqued, I'm picking up speed with the applique. 

After the applique is finished, I will mark the quilting. Blue stars is the next quilt in the hand quilting frame.

I noticed these birds in these trees last week. They were really singing away.

Puss in the Corner, Sewing the Rows

I've started sewing the rows together, I always forget how time consuming it can be to sew diagonal rows! Almost half the rows are sewn together. The top left corner is completed with the first 10 diagonal rows.

The blocks on the right are partial rows needing to be sewn.

A full layout with the rest of the blocks. I'll begin sewing more rows starting with the bottom right corner and working toward the center, leaving the 3 center rows for last.

The blocks take up the entire floor, I can't even sit in my chair at the quilt, I'm standing and leaning over the keyboard.

Puss in the Corner Progress

The alternate pink/brown blocks are pieced for puss in the corner. I've started arranging the blocks on the display floor but I don't have room to distribute all the blocks at one time. 

There are enough blocks arranged to sew 9 diagonal rows and I'm starting that process but I won't sew those rows into a section yet. I need to add brown setting triangles. I think I have enough brown fabric left from the border of scrappy barn quilt, if not, I'll pick up more the next time I go to the grocery store.

I had pulled the first two blocks of three diagonal rows on the top left side and took them to the sewing machine. Then I remembered I didn't take a picture, so I did. I didn't lay those blocks back down. 

I've used all the original fabrics leftover from Wilfred & Cloves. I've pulled fabrics from the stash that will look good, not necessarily exact match but close enough. Some of these fabrics were in the ugly class (to me anyway!) but look much better when cut in small squares and sashed.

Slow Sunday Stitching

Last week I made sure there was time for hand applique and hand quilting. 

The first border corner of blue Stars Around the Garden has had the leaves appliqued and is finished. Leaves make such a difference! A start has been made on the second corner. The pattern for Stars Around the Garden is here.

I quilted across Noah's Ark crib quilt, the sea is finished and most of the ark is too. I'll start quilting the animals this week but they're going to take awhile, there is a lot of detail with them. I had more pictures of Noah's Ark but they've disappeared into the abyss!

Puss in the Corner

For my next project, I'm making a Puss in the Corner quilt utilizing blocks left from the Wilfred & Cloves quilt made several years ago. That pattern is from Creating Heirlooms One Stitch at a Time by Carolyn Konig. I made my quilt larger than Carolyn's pattern called for, I wasn't very good at figuring how many blocks I needed so there were leftover blocks.

When my daughter saw the quilt, she thought the blocks would make a pretty quilt by themselves without the center applique, so I put all the fabrics, blocks and partials blocks in a bag for someday. Someday is now here.

The above blocks were left from the original quilt.

I press the pink/brown blocks differently from the aqua-teal/red blocks so they lock together when sewing.

The blocks alternate so you have a 4 patch in the corners of each block.

I need a total of 263 blocks, the teal/red blocks have been pieced and I'm working on the pink/brown blocks.

I'm not planning to add a pieced border to the top and bottom of the quilt like I did for Wilfred & Cloves, I'm also not adding the applique either. 

I love the technique of strip piecing and strip piece all I can. The center strip is cut 4" and the side strips are 1-1/2". 

Half of the strips are cut into 4" widths and the other half are 1-1/2" widths. I have added fabrics to the fabric left from the original quilt. 

I don't have an AccuQuilt cutter, I use the poor man's cutter, a June Tailor Speed Cut mat. 

The pictures aren't placed where I want them but I'm not in the mood to argue with Blogger.

Scrappy Barn Quilt Flimsy

Scrappy barn quit is a flimsy! It's a log cabin pattern by Edyta Sitar from her book Scrappy Fireworks Quilts. In her book she calls her quilt Blue Barn Quilt but I've renamed my quilt to scrappy barn quilt. Edyta also has an individual pattern called Blue Barn but they're not the same pattern.

I was disappointed when the center of my quilt was sewn together, it looked rather blah and dull. The narrow black border and the outside brown border brought the center to life! I am very pleased with this flimsy. The quilt top measures 80-1/2" by 94".

I had been using the small leftover strips to make the centers of the log cabin blocks but since I have enough blocks pieced, what do I do with those small strips and all the other 1-1/4" strips? You start another quilt!

String X is the project to use strips. I'm even sewing the very little pieces together to make larger strips. The paper base of the block is cut 4-1/2" by 10-1/2".  I'm also using triangles left from other projects too.

It's ok if the bottom corners aren't covered, you're going to cut the corners into a point.

String X is a Bonnie Hunter pattern and can be found here. I don't know how many blocks I'll make, so far 5 rectangles have been pieced.

Applique Progress

 My focus this week has mainly been on the scrappy barn quilt but I did get some applique time.

There are two blues in the larger flower but they're too close in color. I'm not changing them though, leaves should happen this week.

Scrappy Barn Quilt

 The blocks are all pieced and sewn into rows. Now I'm sewing the rows together. I had thought I'd have sewn rows to show you but when they get sewn together incorrectly, they need to come apart again. Jack the ripper and I were busy last evening. Hopefully I'll have a flimsy to show you next week.

I added 10 blocks to the top and bottom of the quilt to make my quilt rectangular. The extra blocks just follow the zigzag design.

Scrappy Barn Quilt

More log cabin blocks for scrappy barn quilt have been pieced. The 100 blocks I needed are completed but the problem is, I don't want a square quilt. I need to piece 20 more blocks so my quilt will be rectangular.

The pattern was designed by Edyta Sitar and is from her book Scrappy Fireworks Quilts. In her book she calls her quilt Blue Barn Quilt but I'm calling mine scrappy barn quilt. I kind of went heavy with pink for this last group of blocks. The next group of blocks will be made utilizing all the strings already cut.

Noah's Quilting has Started

I've started the quilting on Noah's Ark crib quilt. The outside border and the blue plaid border are both quilted with Sulky #12  variegated gray thread. I also stitched in the ditch along the green border with the same thread.

After I rolled, the next several borders were stitched in the ditch even though they weren't pieced. Again the gray variegated thread was used.

Yes, the green border looks very crooked, I had to even the edge of the plaid but I didn't do a very good job. This is a functional quilt, not a show quilt, I doubt the child will notice.

After the ditch quilting was finished in this row, I started quilting the waves. The panel has the waves outlined with a thin black line. I'm using a solid dark gray thread for that, again Sulky #12 thread. I think you can see where I've stitched. I also outlined the fish.

This crib quilt isn't going to be closely quilted since it's a panel, not pieced. I could do more quilting if I wanted to but I don't.
