A new long term foundation paper-piecing project called Carolina Lily has been started. Here is my first block!
It took close to 2 hours to piece this first block but I'm hoping to pick speed as I go along. My goal is to piece at leasts 5 blocks every month, maybe more. These blocks finish at 6" so it may take several years to complete this quilt.
I'm using the foundation paper-piecing pattern by Cindy Edgerton. Her design is for a small wall quilt.
I watch From Small Things on Youtube. In 2024 she displayed her red & white quilts and her green & red quilts (Episode 11). She had purchased this pattern then foundation paper-pieced 100 of these little blocks and made them into a lovely quilt. I thought it was so pretty, I wanted a quilt of my own!
The pattern is a physical pattern and the papers are tissue paper, just like the clothing patterns like we used to sew. I copied the tissue paper on my printer then printed my foundation papers on newspaper weight paper.
I did manage to complete 10 blocks in January, now I need to get started on the blocks for February.
You don't need yardage to make these blocks, the largest piece in the blocks is the bottom green triangle. I'm using fabrics I already have on hand. The light green used in 4 of the blocks is at least 20 years old.I'll let you know at the end of 2026 how many blocks have been pieced. WARNING: this is NOT the pattern to learn how to foundation paper piece.

Its a pretty block and you will end up with a lovely quilt. xx
Wow, this will be another stunner, Gretchen! My viewpoint is that I need to make labour intensive, long term projects like this simply because of the high cost of quilting today and Carolina Lily definitely fits that bill!! Is your plan to make 100 blocks or more than that??
So pretty!!!
Feel free to share your progress before the end of 2026, I love this block!
I would like to make at least 100 blocks but if I don't get burnt out, I'll make more. This won't be a king sized bed quilt but I can easily envision it hanging from the rafters of my living room. I like the pieced block border of the center but I think the sashing looks too wide. I'm not sure if I can do the math to change the border. As Scarlett O'Hara said, I'll worry about that tomorrow. Right now I'm focusing on piecing the blocks.
I plan to share an update every month showing how many block are pieced so far.
Oh that is going to be so cute! I hope you post your progress often as I'd love to see the variety of blocks. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

Hi Gretchen, what a lovely block. I can see that this would be a lovely quilt. Good luck and thanks for linking up to I Quilted This!
What pretty blocks. . .all those scraps made perfect little flowers!
Your blocks are lovely! I love Sue at From Small Things as well. Her channel is my favorite quilting channel on youtube. You have a great start so far and interested to see how it goes!
Beautiful! I can imagine all different colors of flowers but I'm a big fan of red.
What a pretty block. You must be very patient!!
That is one of my favorite blocks. Yes, will definitely pick up speed as you make more blocks. Although you can use scraps for PP, I find I do best if I precut the scraps or yardage into strips, triangles, squares, etc. I work out the needed dimensions by creating templates for each piece, including seam allowance.
I've pulled 2" - 3" strips from the boxes. These are the perfect size to use. And I have started cutting the pieces to be used, it's easier to have them precut to the useable size.
What a wonderful long term project! I imagine it will be December before we know it. Thanks for linking up to TGIFF
Your blocks look great and are so cute!
What a delightful new project, Gretchen! I love the variety you've achieved already just by using different red and green fabrics for your blocks. Looking forward to seeing more of this Carolina Lilies project from you, while I'm busy trying to get caught up with Stonefields!
I've done just enough ffp to know exactly how tricky this pattern would be, Gretchen. Kudos to you for mastering it. This is going to be another splendid quilt. I love this block but would have to work it EPP, I think.
What a pretty block. You have been busy. What a wonderful way to use smaller pieces of fabric.
Beautiful blocks. I have made a quilt using one of Cindi's patterns. Sadly she no longer is selling them. I really liked the tissue patterns and the specific size to cut the fabrics. Good luck with your blocks.
I made a quilt with North Carolina Lily blocks a long time ago, and I loved it! Have fun!
Thank you for sharing and linking up.
