What's in Store for '26?

It's a new year, time to share a few of my dreams for this year. This year I don't intend to have as intensive of a list as last year's list was. Most of the projects on that list were worked on if not completely finished. There are several in the flimsy stage that will be quilted this year.

This year is going to be more freeing. There are at least 10 kits I've made by putting fabric and the pattern into a bag. Some of these project have been waiting for years, hopefully some of them will happen this year but definitely not all of them.

Progress continues of quilting Rhapsody in Blue and appliqueing the Stonefields blocks. The Stonefield blocks should be finished this year, then arranged and sewn together. I haven't decided if I'll make the EPP hexie flower for the border or not, applique would look very nice on that quilt. I won't make that decision now, I'll think about it after the center flimsy is completed.

There are several 'out of character' quilts (for me anyway) to work on. I haven't touched my Fabric Vortex since 2022! Here is a link to the November 2022 post.

I didn't remember I had this many blocks and bits & pieces completed. I'm adding in some orphan blocks too. Be warned if you decided to make a fabric vortex it will definitely create vortex chaos in your sewing room!

Here is a link to Amanda Jean's scrap vortex sew-along from 2015. She was able to keep her pieces small, I'm adding larger pieces to my blocks because I don't have the patience to mess with all the tiny blocks!

Or you can check out Jo's Youtube video about Diamond Crumb creating.

Another project started were these very small pineapple blocks. These blocks are foundation paper pieced and use a lot of the small triangles and scraps leftover from other projects.

The pineapple blocks finish at 5", these blocks will definitely not be used for a king sized quilt.

Of course there are all the compassion flimsies that were pieced last year to be quilted this spring. Some will be donated, some will stay here until the right person comes along to gift the quilt to.

The finishing kit for the Designer Mystery quilt, through the Fat Quarter Shop, was sent to me several months ago. I would like to get started piecing the sashing for the blocks so they're ready to add to the blocks.

There are several long term quilts I want to start this year, I'll share those with you when I actually start them.

And . . . I really want to get the bookshelf in the sewing room organized!

What do you have planned for 2026? Feel free to share your plans and dreams.

Can't wait to see all the beauties that are created in 2026. I haven't done a scrap vortex, but it seems like mine are cousins to that. I'm very interrested to see what is in the project bags. Happy new year!

Hello Gretchen
I love your projects and your plans.
I pulled my Stonefield blocks out last night and my plan is to finish my blocks and join the top through 2026.

I enjoy your blog posts so much - looking forward to seeing what you do in 2026. Oh that Amanda Jean - I think of her every time I throw away a scrap - lol!

Ahhh, I do remember my scrap vortex quilts. I enjoyed making them but they do end up as heavy quilts. It's a great way to used up small pieces but sooooo time consuming. Good luck with all of your projects! I'm looking forward to the new year.

Lots to look forward to in 2026 then! Love your design wall with your fabric vortex blocks! Looks like a great way to use up lots of scrappy bits & pieces. Where those maybe older uglier fabrics - we all have 'em - could be slipped in, yes?

Gretchen you have so many beautiful projects on the go now. Your vortex blocks are lovely. Ido enjoy making crumb blocks myself. Looking forward to seeing what those project bags contain as the new year unfolds. Thank you for sharing on To Do Tuesday.

Good Morning and Happy New Year, Gretchen! I would love to go downstairs and make a list of what I will sew on this year and systematically check projects of my list, but for as much as that is how i roll in most other areas of my life, I can’t do this in my sewing life! I’ve tried it, but I seem to need to sew on what I “feel like” sewing on. Maybe I can go make a more general list for the year?? And some of the nicest quilts that an elderly friend would make was called the Scrap Apple and I wonder if it’s the same small pineapple pattern that you have started?? So pretty and useful for eating up our many scraps. Do you ever start a new quilt just because you feel like it, one that’s not on your list??

I love the idea of a scrap vortex and how the finished quilt looks but I can't stand the mess. Every few years I try to find a way to make it work and then I give up. Maybe I'll just have to live vicariously through you

Most of the time the scraps live in a box but it's coming out this winter! I can only stand the mess for about 3 weeks so I need to make progress when it appears.

That Scrap vortex looks amazing already! Yes, working with scraps creates its own chaos er mess in the sewing space! It is worth it in the end. . .at least that is what I tell myself!

I can already see it, things are going to get very exciting with you again. I'm looking forward to your projects, and I always say they just have to be beautiful... the Quilts. I wish you lots of fun.
Happy New Year!

I wonder how heavy those Scrap Vortex quilts are when finished? I was surprised how heavy my pineapple log cabin quilt top was when I finished it, with 3/4" finished width strips and quarter inch seam allowances, I figure that quilt top is 3 or more layers of fabric thickness for 2/3 or more of the quilt, before factoring in the batting and backing layers. It turned out heavier than expected but thankfully, not stiff! Do you know what you'll use your Vortex quilt for when it's finished? Happy New Year!

I have made several scrap vortex baby quilts, most using flannel leftovers. They are really soft and have been well received by the babies and their parents. I pieced the backs with larger pieces of flannel. The flannel scrap bin is overflowing again….time for another one! Your scrappy projects are full of memories of quilts you have made over the years. Keep sewing! Gail at the cozy quilter

Two years of RSC quilts accomplished primarily with crumb piecing and I'm feeling very much been there, done that. Ready to work with larger pieces. Your post helped explain why I was balking at working with small pieces again. Seems you will be quite busy in 2026. That's quite the ambitious year you have planned for yourself.

Hi Gretchen, it looks like you're going to have another busy year! I read about the scrap vortex - interesting! I'm looking forward to seeing your quilted flimsies. The party is now called "I Quilted This!" See you then!
