Comforters & a Quilt

Other projects were pushed back while Radiant Blues was created. Now I need to play catch up.

First were 4 comforters that needed bindings attached. I did not piece the tops or knot them, I'm just part of the process by sewing the bindings then delivering them to the MCC Resource center in Goshen.

In April, Carolyn brought a comforter along to the retreat to have me deliver. It also needed binding. Comforters don't have a binding like quilts, we just fold the backside to the front and stitch it down. I use this tutorial I published last year.

Carolyn's comforter is beautiful and she had it quilted! Since this is a donation anyway, I suggested donating it to the Michiana Mennonite Relief sale held every September and she said yes. Since that is what she's going to do, I can't just fold the backing over to the front, it has to have a real binding.

Carolyn said she would purchase fabric and mail it to me for binding but I said I would use the fabric I cut from the excess backing. I decided to add some dark brown to the binding to make sure I had enough fabric. It doesn't really show though, binding is so narrow.

Maybe you can see it better on the backside of the quilt?

The pattern for Carolyn's quilt is Iconic designed by Lela Boutique. Her finished quilt measures 63.5" by 77".

We looked out the north window the other evening and we saw this doe with her fawn. Sorry the picture is blurry, it's taken through a window screen.

I love how your guild divides the process of making tops, allowing you to do the binding since that's your favorite part. All of these will find a happy home, thanks to you! Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

What a lovely quilt that will be sure to bring comfort to someone. The touches of brown in the binding are subtle and work very well!

That is a great design - the squares look like they might float away! Lovely to see the deer in your garden. We had them in France but did have to put up loosing the odd plant! xx

Those quilts look so comfy and my, isn't Caroline's quilt a real beauty. It is in such good hands now to take it to the proper finish. We have the screens on the windows too and it makes it a little harder to see the wildlife. But sweet to see the doe and fawn. Haven't seen any fawns yet here. Thanks for sharing it all, Gretchen.

Hearing of your binding technique reminds me so much of my grandmother as that is how she finished her quilts for us. She would even use double knits and even fake colored fur for backings. She was forever doing something creative. Yeah for donation quilts and your efforts to bind them!

Such lovely donation quilts, thank you for sharing your tutorial for finishing them. Carolun's comforter is pretty, soft and sweet colors, and your binding perfect. How cute are this mum doe and baby!

Nice quilts! We have a set of twin babies and 2 other ones. They love to play in the area by the Studio in early morning. They are looking good this year. We have good weeds and keep water for them. Hugs
