Exciting quilting progress happened this week, I quilted the 3" finished border all the way across the quilt! This means I'll start quilting the white border after I roll!
Quilting from the right side to the left side.
I don't normally put the quilt top on the frame like this. The instructions say to place it over the top so it feeds over the top, not underneath like you see. I decided to try it this way once just to see what it was like.
As you can see, the quilt top isn't as tight as I would like it to be but it hasn't been a problem. I personally like quilting on a quilt that's a bit loose.
I've hand quilted on other peoples quilts that have been pulled so tight, it was hard (for me) to quilt!
This is my personal preference, not every hand quilter is this way. The next quilt into the frame will be loaded the way the directions say.
The problem is with the side reel, the cog slips! The way the quilt is installed does make a difference.

Love your quilting. I prefer a taut surface to stitch on. I think that is due to my cross-stitching preferences.
Thanks for sharing that. You've gotten a lot done with that method. I think I would have given up and unloaded it and reloaded with it going over the rail. I have two hand qult frames made from the Stearns and Foster instructions. The cogs do slip if I try to put them too tight but maybe they do get tight enough.
Impressive - the end is in sight! I am always so inspired by your quilting.
When I embroider, I do like the fabric stretched tightly but not for quilting. My way is not the only way to quilt, everyone has a different preference. Happy Stitching!
Congrats on finishing the blue all the way across this past week! So happy for you my friend... Kathi
Wonderful progress! I'm like you, I like the quilt to be a "little" loose, not much. It's easier for me to get nice stitches that way.
Your quilting is always so beautiful, Gretchen! I'm glad you've found a way that works for you!
Gosh! This is beautiful!! I definitely need loose fabric for quilting.
I've enjoyed each and every installment of your quilting this piece. Your hand quilting is truly a work of pure art!
This is a stunning quilt!
You've been doing an awesome job quilting this, Gretchen. And here you are, facing the end. It's been nearly a year and a half but you've persisted. I admire that.
Personally, I'm with you. Although I quilt in a hoop rather than a frame, I like a soft quilt. My needles don't bend or break and I find it easier on the hands.
Great progress on your stitching! You do such lovely work! Hope you have a great week!
Simply wonderful quilting!
Your quilting is wonderful. It is always a pleasure seeing your progress on this quilt, Gretchen
I do so enjoy watching your hand quilting on this beauty. So near the finish line, band of course you do such a lot of working on other projects in between times.
Wow, the last border! I love watching the progress. Well done!
Thank you for sharing and linking up ;)
As always, I'm in awe of your quilting!
So close to a finish. It is looking amazing! Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!
I too, prefer looser to tighter, but I only have a hoop, so maybe that’s normal!
I love seeing your quilt spring to life as the quilting stitches give it dimensional texture. That cable quilting in the border is gorgeous!
