Oak Leaves & Acorns Block; Pastor's Attic Quilt

Block 12 for the Pastor's Attic Quilt is completed! The name for this block is obvious, Oak Leaves & Acorns. I used the back basting applique method entirely for this block.

Back-basting is also the technique I'm using on the next block which is block 24. When I start working on a new block, I look at it and think, this is going to take forever, but it doesn't.

I remember as a little girl watching my mother applique and thinking, "Someday I want to do that." Now I am!

This hasn't been a very long post so I am going to share this picture of the butterfly weed blooming. The first signs of Autumn are here.

I like that block - the leaves really catch my attention. I was surprised to see the butterfly blooming now - I have one plant that grew wild and it blooms in July and I never see it after that. I saw one growing by the road around that time too I was going to mark it so I could dig it up in the fall and move it near to the garden area and I forgot - I will need to find some seeds as I would like to have more of it growing.

Your block is charming! What is back basting applique? I use the freezer paper and starch method and am pretty much self taught so not exposed to other methods.
I saw the photo of the pretty yellow flowers and thought you had grown them along your fence row until you said they were weeds! A rose by any other name!

Block 24 is called Crossed Pinecone Variation. I'm making nice progress but I don't think it looks like pinecones at all. I think it looks more like a snowflake in beige and red. I love the butterfly weed. I haven't noticed it attracts butterflies though.

Your block is beautiful!
I watched a video lesson on back basting, but I haven't tried it yet. It looked sensible but fussy...

I like backbasting when there are small curves close together. I'm able to stitch easier than trying to use the freezer paper needleturn method. It works for me but not everyone likes it and that is ok. I do freezer paper too but I'll do any method to get the job completed. I'm not an expert but applique is just like any other skill, practice, practice, practice.

I have never tried back basting. I will have to research it. Thanks for sharing your lovely block with Oh Scrap!

I haven't tried back basting either, but I have tried to applique oak leaves and it is really HARD!
So you have done a fabulous job on this block!

For me anyway, it was far easier to back baste those leaves than freezer paper method. There isn't much space in between those curves. They're not perfect but I'm pleased.

Dear Gretchen, I did enjoy reading you saying that when you were a little girl you watched your mum doing patchwork and wanting to do it too. How lovely that you are now making quilts for your children and grandchildren. Loved the photo of your hubby and DGS walking hand in hand, reminds me of my Hubby and our eldest GD walking down a lane hand in hand when she was 2years old and now she is away at UNI we do miss her as she always came for a sleep over on a Friday when she was home here. Hugs Glenda

Take care of yourself Glenda. You are now the grandmother the grandchildren watch doing quilting. What wonderful memories you are all making. Blessings, Gretchen
