I've sewn the binding and made a reservation for quilting with the long arm quilter. Sometime this summer I'll be able to show you a completely finished quilt!
Judy had me make the blocks differently than how I normally piece log cabin blocks. She has you cut the strips from the length of fabric, not width of fabric. This was to keep your fabric from stretching. Another change is you piece the blocks in courthouse steps design, the light and dark strip are both the same length each round.
I'm not sold on the length of fabric idea. I don't normally have a problem with the fabric stretching and if it does, it isn't hard to to make the block fit in. But I do like the courthouse step piecing method. I will probably piece my next log cabin quilt like that.
I've picked a couple more of the patterns in this book to make someday; but not this year.
Here are 2 of the side half-triangle blocks. There are 4 of them, but I forgot to take a picture of the others.
Another triangle block. The other block I made from this pattern had red berries. I'm trying not to make the blocks look the same. I also added the red circles.
I'm tired of making the hexie flowers that are needed for most of these blocks and decided to make some changes.
For this block I made a yo-yo flower and I really like it.
Now I'm working on the next 4 triangles.

That is a fabulous log cabin quilt!
Well done. I consider myself colour challenged when it comes to picking colours for a quilt. But there are those who instinctively know how to pull the most unlikely colours and they work!
I couldn't believe all the ugly green fabrics and then there was this pinkish/purplish fabric, ugh! But it is the pinkish fabric that give a splash of brightness to the quilt.
Gorgeous applique! Your vines are so smooth and your colour choices are so beautiful!
Great job on the log cabin! At the quilt auction yesterday a quilt like this sold for $1000.
Your log cabin turned out pretty - even with the strange colorway. You have really gone to town on that Sweet Surrender and I love the Yo-Yo's. I am working on the Potts BOM and this month's block I chose to change the flower and used some EPP with flower petals..... started working on the 24 that are required and they are tricky little duds. But will be pretty when I become more proficient working on those 5/8" pieces! Have a great Memorial Day! You have been busy!
Love the border on your log cabin! Nice Applique blocks too. I need to do another Applique project....
I adore log cabin quilts and yours is an absolute beauty. Your applique is very pretty. Your berries and grapes looks so perfectly round. Wow.
Great progress on your appliqué blocks. And that log cabin quilt is beautiful. I am looking forward to seeing the finish. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!
I use Karen Buckley's perfect circles for my circles. Now my circles are actually circles. They were a very good investment and I recommend them.
The applique is oh so pretty. Love all those purples in the circles.
I just love your quilt...I have that book and I have been drooling over that pattern!! Spectacular!!
I have sweet surrender in line as my next quilt. I will be using Kate Spain fabrics
I love seeing how yours progresses. Is there a facebook page dedicated to this pattern I wonder? It is so great to see how others are doing.
I know there is a facebook group for people working on Sweet Surrender but I don't do facebook so I don't know how to tell you to find it. I look forward to seeing your Sweet Surrender blocks.
Summer Lake Cabin turned out beautifully. A great way to turn ugly fabrics into something special.
The center of that quilt is so stunning!
Gretchen, your Sweet Surrender blocks are beautiful!
The log cabin is beautiful. You're right whoever picked out the fabrics did a fabulous job. Your applique is lovely.
gorgeous log cabin quilt!
Dear Gretchen, how I love these wee blocks you are making they look so like the 1930 wee blocks that were made on Flour bags, I m making up some 1930 blocks that have a large empty space in the middle of them so adding similar wee flowers as you are making. Its a long term project like may of my projects LOL Cheers Glenda
I have her book, there is a quilt in there which I want to make. Your quilt came out stunning!
Congrats on your flimsy Gretchen. I'm not sold on the idea of cutting length of fabric either though it may make sense for some projects. I like the addition of the red circles on your applique blocks too. and that yo-yo flower is sweet. Thanks for linking up at WHOOMP There IT Is! I hope to see you again.
Please send me your snail mail address...you won a prize from my blog, for sharing your amazing quilt!!
