Blue Stars is Completely Finished!

The first post about blue Stars Around the Garden was posted September 4, 2020. It has taken me less than a year to applique, piece and hand quilt this quilt. That is actually good progress on a hand appliqued and hand quilted quilt.

Here is the quilt with the binding applied, labeled and washed to remove markings.

I like flange binding but the problem is when the quilt is washed, the flange doesn't lay flat afterwards. Who wants to mess around pressing the flange on a quilt so it lays flat? Not me for sure.

Instead of flange binding, I added a yellow outside border. After the binding was added, the yellow border measures 3/4" wide. The binding is the same fabric used in the blue outside border.

The next picture is a close up of the blue quilting on a border.

A view of the back side of the quilt taken outside. The muslin backing does a great job of showing the quilting designs.

It was windy when I was taking the pictures so I included a few of those pictures too.

A close up of the blue quilting on the backside of the quilt.

The next three pictures are of the quilting on the backing when it's displayed on my bed.

After washing the quilt measures 82" by 100", it measured 90" by 106" before quilting, at least. At least I thought it was that size, I never thought it would shrink that much.  Oh well, it is the size it is.

I like the way the quilting has turned out, you never know for sure if the design will come together like you view it in your mind. I would make a few minor changes but overall I'm pleased.

All the blue fabrics came from my stash, not a designer collection so this is a true scrap quilt! I did need to buy more of the yellow fabric.

Several people asked me last Sunday what I'm going to do with it. She's a donation quilt and will be sold during the quilt auction at the Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale which will be held Saturday, September 25, 2021 at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds, Goshen Indiana.

I was planning for blue stars to be a donation quilt last fall when I started piecing the blocks.

  12. I had thought I'd gift the B & W churn dash to the oldest son and his wife for their 25th wedding anniversary but I've changed my mind. I just can't let that one go yet. I have several years to come up with another quilt for them, probably in purple since that is her favorite color.

    1. I talk about attaching my label in last Friday's post. If someone tries to remove it, they're going to have to take apart that corner of the quilt!

  16. Beautifully done, Gretchen!! Instead of a flange, I like to do a faux-piped binding. I stitch down the "ditch" between the colors and often stitch another line right along the edge. You get the added color of a flange without the flapping about.

  18. Thank you for sharing your journey with me. I loved each and every picture of your hand quilting - 'sigh'. It's hard for me to even think that you would donate this amazing quilt; I really need to work on my 'letting go' and learn that giving is the best reward. Thanks again; I look forward to the next journey of hand quilting that you share. "HEART"

  37. This quilt is so gorgeous! Congratulations on finishing this beauty. The piecing, applique and quilting is wonderful. I found the same issue with flange binding. You have found a good solution. I make a two color machine binding sometimes that looks like a flange but it is machine sewed down to the front. This method works for me. I do have a tutorial for how I cut and sew this on the sidebar on my blog, if your are interested. Thank you for sharing your amazing work in my linky party ... :) Pat
