The first flimsy to be quilted is Modern Amish made in conjunction with RSC except I was impatient and sewed ahead.
I stitched in the ditch vertically and horizontally around the blocks then quilted diagonally both directions through the background fabrics using Glide gray thread. I thought about using black but that seemed too dark. Maybe the gray is too light but it's what I had on hand.
It's interesting how my shopping habits have changed, a year ago I would have driven to the fabric store and purchased a darker gray thread. Now I just use what's in the thread box.
A dark gray floral was used for backing fabric. White thread was in the bobbin so the quilting shows on the backing fabric.
The original pattern, called Sound Check, comes from McCalls Quilting, March/April 2014 magazine and was designed by John Kubiniec.
After washing, my finish measures 58" by 81". This is the largest quilt I've quilted with my sewing machine.

ReplyDeleteI love how you decided to stitch sound check ... isn't it nice to have some off the waiting to be quilted list!?? My honey tells me repeatedly... you can't hand quilt them all! But I sew want to...lol! I love the precision I get with a hand quilted finish... if I could only be faster at that!!! the quilt turned out great - I love the colors and the stitching suits the quilt really fine - I too do not run out to find thread or a wash out blue pen - instead it is on line shopping for me and I try to think in advance what I will need

ReplyDeleteThe machine quilting I do is very simple. I have no interest in trying anything fancy, I'll save the feathers for hand stitching. This quilt is for a 6 year old grandson. Machine quilting is perfect for a child's quilt. Happy stitching!
DeleteYour quilt is so striking! It does feel great to get the flimsy done - especially if they are going to be gifts. You do take some great pictures of your quilts outdoors! Mine would be full of sand if I tried that, maybe bugs. LOL. Another finish! Great for you! Hugs

ReplyDeleteOh, I love this! I think the way you quilted it is perfect for the quilt. I do the same as you...use what is on hand. Seems to work just fine. Congrats on moving forward on some quilts!

ReplyDeleteHi Gretchen, what a lovely quilt. I think that light gray was a good idea. No matter what, it would only match some blocks. I think that it looks good in the gray and the white squares so probably the best choice overall. It's a lot of work to quilt a big quilt on a home machine. Well done!

DeleteI'm a little late to the party but I think your quilt is beautiful. I love the rich colors with the dark background. I'm with you on the quilting. My quilting is not perfect but it gets the job done. I call it my "folk art" quilting. It's a great feeling of accomplishment to finish a quilt. Yea!
