Piecing 9 Patches

I'm not working on a major project right now. Spring is a busy time of year so I've started piecing 9 patches as an easy start & stop project.

I'm making lots of 3" finished 9 patches. I make most of my 9 patches with strip piecing.

I'm piecing both types of patches.

Fabrics left over from other projects are being used.

The blue 9 patches are for Bonnie Hunter's Double Delight pattern.

Of course I'm making this a full sized quilt, there will be more patches than I need but you can never have too many 9 patches.

The light cornered 9 patches are for this quilt. Nine patches with squares in between, easy peasy.

This fabric looks blue but it is actually turquoise.

I'm not sure what the black patches are for but I envision something with dark reds and golds.

There are 3 tray full of 9 patch sections ready to be sewn.

  2. You seem to have a problem with 9 Patches, not sure there is an addiction program for that, but I will pray for your recovery!! I had an HST problem, I am still learning to live with this disease. LOL How do you even keep them all straight?

    1. I think the 9 patch disease is easier on the body since it's is straight seams, no triangles! To keep them straight, I cut the sections in groups and stack them together. After sewing the first 2 sections together, I press them then stack them with the next section on top. Works for me!

  3. nine patches can be used for so much if you make too many it will be ok because you can keep using them for other things :)

  5. Hi Gretchen! I enjoy making nine-patch blocks myself. They are a great leader/ender project and the Irish Chain pattern has been my go-to baby quilt choice for ages. Just recently I've been trying to expand a bit. HAHA! Thanks for linking up today. ~smile~ Roseanne

  10. Nine patches are so fun and mindless almost. I was working on some orange and white ones today for a quilt I'm making. It was just unhurried stress-less sewing. I like the patches with the alternate blue/turquoise.

  16. 3 inches 9 patches are my go to whenever I need a leader-ender. I have a big tub by my sewing machine of 1.5 strips. I grab any two that "go" together and make a 9 patch. There's so many quilts out there that I admire, I'll never be done sewing 9 patch blocks. ;^)

  18. That is a lot of nine patches, but how handy to have groups of colors already finished and ready for a project!

  19. This looks like the perfect stop and start project. Nine patches are so versatile, it will be fun to see what you decide for the black and white ones. Thanks for sharing at the Chameleon's Colour & Inspiration party.

  20. That is a lot of 9 patches. The black would look great with gold patches between. I've been saving more scraps lately and I have 2 baskets full, 6" 9 patches would be a perfect use for them. Now to find the time for cutting. Thank you for the idea and for linking up to Put your foot down.
