Scrappy Quilts & Sweet Surrender

I've decided to make a quilt for each of my grandchildren and to make it challenging, I'm trying to just use fabrics from my stash.
Years ago I had cut a lot of five inch blocks. I got them out of the box to see what I could make with them. I'm not good with a random design, I have to have a plan. Trip Around the World was the pattern I chose. Scrappy Trips was stitched in the ditch horizontally and vertically. Then I stitched diagonally from side to side.

I tear pages out of magazines for ideas and the Width of Fabric quilt idea was from a picture in a magazine. How simple, I can do that! This quilt was quilted in the ditch horizontally first, then vertically with 1" straight stitching.
Fabric from my mother's stash was used for the backing.

Scrappy Trips measures 50" X 60" and the Width of Fabric quilt measures 42" X 68". These two quilts are for the two youngest granddaughters.
I've started piecing quilts for the grandsons. I'm using a Bonnie Hunter pattern, Scrappy Majestic Mountains. I pulled the box of mom's homespun fabrics for this project. So far the blocks are still in the process of being sewn, this definitely is NOT a fast pattern.

Applique in the evening is very relaxing. Three more Sweet Surrender triangle blocks and a half block have been completed.

I didn't take a picture, but several weeks ago I won a package of 1" Hexagons from A Quilting Reader's Garden. They came in the mail this week and were a very welcome package on a cloudy, dreary day. Thanks!

    1. I use Karen Buckley's Perfect Circles for my circles. Bye the time I get the plastic template out of the center, they aren't quite perfect circles anymore, but they sure are better than what I made before I had the circle templates! Looking forward to seeing your Sweet Surrender blocks. Enjoy the pattern!

  10. I'll bet many of us have a box of 5" squares from the heyday of nickel square designs! You'll have fun rediscovering your stash to create your grandchildren's quilts.

    1. No pressure, but I can normally applique a block in 2 evenings. The grapes did take longer, there are a lot of circles! But not that much longer. I wasn't real excited about this pattern before I started, I just wanted to join in the group from my guild working on this quilt. Now I am really glad I did. I'm loving these blocks in the 30's fabrics and I think I am going to be very pleased with the quilt when finished. I'm even thinking of possibly hand quilting this quilt someday.

  13. It looks like you draw the triangle and then applique each section on a larger piece of fabric, am I correct? Of course it is Monday AM and I may still be asleep. LOL Beautiful work!

    1. I am using the same background fabric for all of my blocks. I can get 4 full triangles and 2 half triangles from 1 width of fabric. You will need to orient half the triangles opposite because the half triangles are different. That might not make sense until you look at the pattern.

  16. I haven't done much with 30's reproduction fabrics so I decided to do Sweet Surrender in them. I am very pleased with how colorful they are turning out to be.
