Blue Stars, Starting the Center

After I rolled the last time, just to change things up a little, I quilted the left side borders then the left side block.

This is a closeup of the fussycut center of the block.

Then I moved my chair to the right side of the quilt and quilted the right side quilt block then the right side borders.

A close up of the fussycut center of this block.

Now for the exciting part I've been looking forward to, I started quilting the center of the quilt. The quilting design was given to me years ago from an employee of a quilt shop. She just gave me a printed piece of paper, I don't have a name for this design, I call it curved triangles.

The quilting lines are marked with a light gray pencil which doesn't show in the photos. This looks so nice with the variegated blue thread. The blue thread is Sulky 12 weight and the white is YLI regular hand quilting thread. I am quilting on a Grace quilting frame.

Most of my Amaryllis have quit blooming but this beauty just opened. It's bud had 3 flowers and is a little darker red then the other ones I've shown you.

There is another Amaryllis which will be blooming for the first time in March. I'll show you that one next week.

Some commenters have asked about the embroidered quilt in the background. This is Grandma's Embroidered Blocks and you can read about it here.

    1. The lay gave me a piece of paper which I copied several times. The design is dark enough it showed through the white background fabric without using a light box. I could easily see to trace the design onto the fabric. I've never seen it anywhere else either and I always look at the stencils when I'm at a fabric store. I've also checked online stencil stores, they don't have it either. I think it must have been an original design from the store which has since closed.

  15. Your curvy triangle quilting design looks amazing! Gretchen, I may have asked you this before but I can't remember. What kind of batting do you use for hand quilting like this? You have such a nice soft puff between your stitching lines that really accentuates your quilting.

    1. For this quilt I'm using a low loft Fairfield polyester batting. I don't want a lot of puff, this batting seems to work well.

  18. Your quilting is gorgeous, Gretchen. I have a question. How did you mark your curvy triangle pattern onto your quilt ? I have several quilting designs on paper but have yet to use them.

    1. I was fortunate I could see the design through the white background without using a light box. I used a Prismacolor Verithin pencil, color Argent Metallique #753 Metalli Silver. This is a very light gray. I can see it easily when I'm quilting but if you stand back 2 or 3 feet, you can't see the line at all. Someone found the quilting stencil online, I'll be sharing the link next Sunday.
