Lucy Finish

My Patchwork of the Crosses designed by Lucy Boston is finished! I had to force myself to finish this project. I did NOT hand quilt, I actually machine quilted the little quilt with my sewing machine. She's not perfect but she is finished!!

I'm not a table runner sort of person, for now this is hanging on the wall. It is pretty and I do like it now that it's finished, but I never want to make another one.

My original plan was to quilt around the flowers which is the way the white connecting fabric was quilted.

But I didn't like the way that fabric puckered so all the rest of the blocks are stitch inside each elongated hexie. The addition stitching made the hexies lie flat which is what I wanted.

Colored thread was used for the quilting. You don't really see it on the front but the back of the quilt looks very interesting.

For the outside border, I quilted a Baptist Fan design. This little quilt measures 29" by 40-1/2".

  3. It's a beautiful little quilt. The quilting must have taken ages - all those stops and starts! But well worth the time and effort :-)

    1. I probably really should have started and stop while quilting each square but I didn't, stitched across to the next hexie. There was no way I was going to start and stop all the time. I had enough threads to bury the way it was!

    1. I set the stitch speed very slowly and just stitched along the edge of the block. Then I actually just stitched across and stitched the next block. Probably unprofessional but it sure worked for me!!

  5. What a beauty! The colors are so vibrant and blend so well! I do not blame you on a repeat, or a bigger quilt. You did more than I did!!!!!!! Hugs

  7. It's lovely! Why didn't you enjoy making it? Was it the hand stitching? Or the design? My mum has made a big version and she's quilting it at present. I'm looking forward to seeing it again. Thank you for linking up to the Peacock Party.

    1. I don't know why I didn't enjoy the process, I love the fabrics I used but I just got tired of the whole thing. That's why I only made 6 blocks. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for EPP this year. The blocks your mother has made are beautiful! She's going to have a lovely quilt when it's finished. Happy Stitching!

  8. The backside shows the very pretty quilting designs. The blocks must be fun to play with fabrics and stitch together. I have seen such an interesting variety over a period of time on different blogs and web sites.

  10. Wow! I am impressed that you did the paper piecing as well as the hand quilting. It truly is lovely and I hope you enjoy it on a wall. I have had the paper pieces to do for sometime. Now I know what I will do with them Thanks so much for the inspiration.

    1. No, I did NOT hand quilt this guy, didn't have the patience for that. It took awhile to get the machine quilting done but it still was faster than by hand. I just wanted this done!!!!!

  11. This tiny quilt is stunning! So intricate and interesting. I can see where it would be a real challenge.

  12. Oh Gretchen, I love those colours! You have done an amazing job with all those tiny pieces. The way you have used the floral print to create a kaleidoscope effect in the centre of each cross is really effective.
