More Quilting

The 6th row of white blocks are finished along with the bottom points on the row 7 churn dash blocks.

I know the pictures all look the same each week, but this is what I'm working on.

The left side border with the first quilted white block.

The next two blocks. Actually there are 4 blocks with this design in this row but I'm just showing you 2 of them. The other 2 blocks look exactly this these.

The right side white block and the right side borders.

Back view of the quilt in the frame. Notice the blue square-in-a-square border. After that border gets quilted, there is 9" more of border to be quilted. I'm getting closer to being finished. It also looks like there might not be enough batting! No problem, I'll whip stitch more batting along the edge.

Before I'll get to that pieced border, I have to finish the center of the quilt. Two more churn dash rows and a row of white squares.

  2. I like that you stitch the border as you go, but is is marked? It doesn't appear to be in the photo. How do you know that it will end exactly where you want it to with a full swag? I always fret over these things and spend hours planning them out. Your quilting and the quilt itself is quite beautiful by the way.

    1. The feathers on the border are marked. I lightly mark the design with a silver pencil, lightly being the key word. When I mark a border, I always mark the corners first. Then I take my stencil and see how many stencil lengths fit on the border. I mark each measurement with a brightly colored pin. When I see how much space is left between the last stencil and the corner, I figure out how to divide that space up. Several of the feather swags have a feather added in. The curve of the feather isn't always perfect, but you can't see it after you have it quilted. I am marking the straight lines in the border after I quilt the feathers. I didn't know if I wanted the lines there or not. I wanted to see how puffy the border was without them. I decided they definitely needed the straight lines. I never had a class on marking quilts, this is what I've come up with on my own. On my March 12th post, I talk about the pencils I use to mark the quilt. I hope this helps you.

  3. you are coming along nicely on the quilt and will be done before you know it. I assume if the border doesn't come out exactly like you want it to you stretch the design out slightly as you get closer to the corner? that is what I do.

    1. I mark the border before I start quilting. I don't like surprises when I'm quilting.

  4. I feel like my pics are much the same each time I post too on my hand quilting progress... your stitching is sooo lovely though! Soon you will be to the border and will wonder how it happened so fast though! lol Funny how it works :) Love your frame and how you can get pics all around it... mine is too heavy to move much! 1. My frame isn't too heavy to move but it is awkward and takes 2 people to move it. This is where it sits. Our TV is on a rolling stand so I can turn the TV around so I can watch it while I quilt.

    1. Try committing to quilting 15 minutes a day. You'll be surprised how often that 15 minutes turns into an hour.

  8. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who has had to whip stitch a little bit of batting on because the batting ran out before the quiilt did! :). It just happened to me on the quilt I'm finishing now and I was so frustrated because I was sure I had eveything centered and straight! Anyway, your quilting is beautiful, and I know it's a good feeling to be able to see the end!

I always finish my projects but in a random order.....not the greatest plan! I just love it all, I guess. This one has inspired me. It is so tranquil......lovely work and blog! I look forward to it always...Carrolyn

    1. Thank you. The quilting is going slowly now since summer is here, too much to do outside! But I find the hand quilting calming and relaxing.

  19. Your quilting is absolutely beautiful! And I love seeing your steady progress. I quilt with a big round hoop, and therefore don't get that feeling of accomplishment as I go along.

    1. Thank you. I sit in a chair, the frame is a comfortable height for me, I can rest my right arm on the quilt as I quilt. I like it that the frame is adjustable.
