Rainbow Challenge

I was feeling pretty good last Saturday when I posted my purple blocks for the RSC. But then I got to thinking about my blocks, thinking about how big to make the quilt, how to finish it, how to lay the blocks out and on and  on and on. You know what I mean, we all do this.

I figured up how many blocks I needed but then I decided it needs a border to finish it off. What it really needs is an applique border and I have a pattern that will be perfect for a rainbow quilt.

I dug through my pattern basket and pulled out Star Dance designed by Jill Finley. I had purchased this pattern several years ago but never got around to doing anything with it. The border would be perfect for my quilt.

Then I looked at the Star Dance pattern. Those stars are so cute but they finish at 4"! But if I just make a few a month . . . I can do that.

So I did. Here are my 4 purple Star Dance star blocks.

Aren't they cute? There are 39 blocks in the pattern. The pattern says the quilt finishes at 36".  That size is too small for me so this is going to be a 2 year project and made into a larger quilt.
I also made 3 more blocks for the 4-patch rainbow quilt. I'm using the 4-patches left over from my postage stamp journey.

So once again, my blocks have been completed for January and I'm ready for February's color.

  3. A quilt full of a rainbow of 4" stars will be a lot of fun, especially with an appliqué border! Looking forward to seeing it grow as the year goes on!

  4. Great job! What adorable little stars those are. It will be fun to watch them collect into a nice pile to make a beautiful quilt.

  6. Ah yes - two year projects are great for small blocks. MUCH less tedious than making one right after the next.

  7. Glad you were able to develop you r plan and find the appliqué border. It will be a lovely quilt eventually. I hate doing the math to get things right. So my latest finish required an added-on backing to match the front. But it all works out in the end. And a nice repurpose of the 4-patch blocks.

  13. Hey Lady - love those stars and the pattern. I changed mine too, but am planning on doing some 4 patches each month, just do not know what I will do with them! LOL
    Excellent work!

  14. Your little stars and 4-patches are so cute. Yes I get sidetracked like that too - start off with one idea but head off in a totally different direction! The border on that quilt is gorgeous - it looks like it will be a fun make.

  15. LOL somehow a 2-year quilt is not quite a DrEAMi! but I'm thinking you just might get tantalized by those adorable squirrel, er star blocks and suddenly find yourself dropping your currents must-do projects and getting completely absorbed by these! I love how we all seem to get taken in by more than one RSC project! I myself have somehow got a second one going again this year! Thanks so much for linking up to my first linky party!

    1. You'll be glad to know I've spent this afternoon making 9-patch blocks for Stunning Stars Sew along from over at Confessions of a Fabric Addict's post. I've been trying to stay on focused on piecing a block of Nearly Insane a day so I do get squirreled too.

  16. I love all your blocks. You sound like me....a quilt has to be a decent size to be of any use. Thats my problem..hence the LARGE quilts I make.I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with with you applique etc. :-)
