I too find it fascinating that only some fabrics pick up the dye, while others stayed cream. This was several years ago, and we still use the quilt. I remember having a sailor dress many years ago and the deep navy (attached) tie dyed all over the white dress. I used quite a bit of lemon juice and rewashed it and all the navy came out. Not sure how that would work on quilts though!
