I didn't post last Sunday, it seems like pictures of Rhapsody just look the same. This week you actually see something slightly different. Just to change things up, I've arranged the pictures from the right border going toward the left border.
Right side outside border . . .
which moves into a patchwork border. The pin in the one square is to remind me to finish quilting that square.
which then turns into an applique border . . .
Then another patchwork section. See the blue sashing on the left side, that's the outside border of the center applique.
The blue sashing is too far for me to reach. After I roll, I'll stitch in the ditch on both sides.
Still more of the patchwork . . .
This patchwork section goes all the way around the center applique.
Another applique border in between the patchwork.
More patchwork . . .
And finally, the outside left border. The applique is completed on that side, the rest of the border will be feather quilting.

So many tiny stitches! Do you track how many hours you spend hand quilting a project? This is a beautiful quilt! Gail at the cozy quilter.
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't track the hours of stitching, that's a deceptive figure. Quilters all stitch at a different speed. Sometimes I keep track of the yards of thread used, that's a more accurate measure of use. Thanks for commenting!
DeleteYou must enjoy seeing all the pieces of fabric as you work your way across this beautiful quilt! I cannot fathom how you do such precise hand quilting - it's exquisite.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you making good progress on getting all the sections quilted.
ReplyDeleteMarking that little unquilted square with a pin is a great idea. Especially with white thread on white and your eyes going blurry after a few hours of quilting, it would be easy to miss that spot otherwise! I'm curious, how do you keep track of how many yards of thread you quilt into a quilt? I would think buying the largest spools or cones would be most economical, but the only way I can think to track yards used in the quilt would be to use thread from very small spools so you're using up multiple entire spools and partial spools can be eyeballed. I only ever hand quilted one quilt and I used lots of different thread colors so I really had no idea how much thread total went into the quilt with it being a little from this spool, a little from that one, and a whole basket of thread.
ReplyDeleteThat is great progress that you shared. You must be so pleased with how much further you get each week.
ReplyDeleteYour quilts are always so pretty! I'm going to try my hand at applique but I'm SO ignorant about how to go about it.

Great progress on Rhapsody. Your hand quilting is exquisite, Gretchen! All those small stitches! I'm curious too, how do you keep track on how much thread you use?
ReplyDeleteUsually I only keep track of the large quilts. There are 500 yards of thread on the YLI spool. After that is empty, I measure 1 yard pieces of thread, 5 at a time and keep track of how many yards. I didn't do that for Rhapsody because it would have been so many yards. I estimate by the time Rhapsody is finished, there will be over 900 yards of quilting thread in this quilt.
DeleteSuch beautiful feathers and appliqué!
