Garden Party

I have been piecing the various blocks needed for Bonnie Hunter's Garden Party quilt at the Jane Stickle retreats the last several years. Sewing all the blocks together went fast, a lot faster than piecing the individual blocks.

I decided to take the flimsy to a new to me long arm quilter, Dana Stalter. I am well pleased, she actually had the quilting finished and returned the quilt back to me within 10 days!

This is a very busy quilt and those little squares finish at 1". I selected an all over Baptist fan quilting (no surprise there) to secure all the little pieces.

This is not a regular Baptist Fan design, it's the one designed by the Three Sisters Fabric. This isn't the 3 Sisters who design fabric for Moda (I think it's Moda), 'my' sisters had a store before the designers started designing.

Can you believe it? I've actually made a quilt in which the main color is red. The backing fabric is red wide backing. My quilt was 97" before quilting but it shrank, now it's 92" by 94.5". I wish that I had added another row but too late now. Garden Party is found in Bonnie Hunter's Addicted to Scraps book.

Next week is another Jane Stickle retreat and I've been trying to decide what project I'll work on. Maybe it will be another long term Bonnie Hunter quilt? I'll let you know what I sewed at retreat on my next Wednesday blog post which will be April 15.

  1. The Baptist Fan was a great choice for this quilt pattern. Your piecing is amazing. Aren't all those scraps so much fun to put together? I made one in red as well. I gave it to one of my best friends. You can see mine:https://new2quilting.blogspot.com/2020/12/garden-party-is-finished-2020-rsc-wrap.html
She proudly displays it on the bed in the guest bedroom that you can see from the living room. It makes me smile every time I sit in her living room and get a glimpse of of it. Can't wait to see what get created at your April retreat!

  4. She is a beauty, Gretchen! It’s surprising to see your unquilted and quilted dimensions. I never would have guessed that there would be quite this much shrinkage. I have made Garden party once and it is rare that I want to make a quilt a second time, but this is one that I’ll make again. Have a great day!

  6. Lovely quilt! Man those are small pieces. No wonder it took a while to sew each block. The result is beautiful. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

  7. Oh Gretchen, this is gorgeous! The red is way out of your color comfort zone. The fan was the perfect quilting design.

    1. The clerks at Calico Point mentioned that I don't normally buy red fabrics when I bought some red fat quarters but I love this quilt! I'm even thinking I may make another one someday. I do wonder what it would look like with a blue chain but I would probably use red again.

  8. It's gorgeous! (And, surprise, it's not blue!) 94" square is a big quilt, for sure. Lots of scraps busted for this one.

  11. Such a gorgeous abundance of colourful scraps can only make a fabulous scrappy quilt. Bravo! The Baptist Fan quilting pattern was a good call. It gives the quilt a little "vintage" feeling to it and all the little pieces are well attached. I wanted to follow that sew-along with Bonnie back then but I fell off the wagon. It is still on my to-do list. ;^)

  12. I love Bonnie's patterns too but sometimes the number of pieces is daunting. Well done for sticking with it and the red is glorious to tie it all together. Thanks for joining TGIFF this week.

    1. All those little pieces were exactly why this was a perfect retreat project. It did take me several years to piece this quilt but the wait was worth it.

  14. Your Gardeb Party quilt is beautiful and “your” three sisters Baptist fan (more clamshell) gives it such texture! The red you chose is such a beautiful color of red .

  19. Ha ha ha, that's exactly what I was thinking: Gretchen made a red quilt! Well, some blocks are blue ;) This is a beautiful finished quilt, I love the Baptist Fan pattern too, this one is quite dense and goes perfectly with your tiny little squares. Thank you for sharing your lovely finish and linking up!

  24. Dana looks like a keeper to me. She did an excellent job quilting the Baptist Fan motif and on timely basis. Just as you did piecing all those blocks with 1" squares. A quilt to be treasured.

  27. I like that this is a long-term retreat project. And I love seeing the curves of the fans against the angular patches. Isn't it always amazing how some quilt motifs shrink up a quilt more than others?
